Since breaking ground in Western North Carolina some 16 months ago, Facebook has been running at full speed to get its newest data center online. This week, Zuckerberg & Co. flipped the switch. The new facility, located in Forest City, touts the "first major deployment" of the outfit's Open Compute Project web servers and will be the first "live test" of the OPC's outdoor air-cooling design. It tends to get pretty warm around those parts and humidity levels are a bit outside of ideal data center conditions. The Carolina facility will mirror the projected power utilization effectiveness (PUE) of FB's Oregon data center at just a smidge above 1 - somewhere between 1.06 and 1.08 to be exact. In other words, this means the ratio of power used by the structure and the actual power sent to the hardware is almost perfect with minimal energy loss. No matter, it'll still be using plenty of power. A second identical building is slated to open on the site later this year, but for now, hit the source link for a bit more info on the initial launch.

The AT&T HTC One X is now available to pre-order, and it seems the network may be preparing to show off demo units in store, as evidenced by the latest photos sent our way by an anonymous tipster. Besides that, there's not a whole lot to surprise regular readers here -- it's an HTC One X, on AT&T, with the carrier's branding proudly displayed atop the screen. It'll launch on May 6, and we're expecting it to be just as good as its international Tegra 3-flavored sibling.

Question: Over the years I've gotten a number of tattoos, and they've really become a part of my identity. Most of them are not visible when I'm in work garb, but some of them are, especially when I roll up my sleeves. My boyfriend says I should cover them up when I start job interviews next month. I say an employer shouldn't care about my body art. What do you suggest I do?
Answer: Do what your boyfriend says and cover them up. That's my short answer, but I also have a more nuanced take.
As a rule, you don't want the first impression you create to be the reason you don't advance to the next level. You want to sell yourself without distraction, and without a hiring manager making a conscious (or unconscious) judgment about your professional skill set based on some ink.
I know that you're objecting vigorously, saying that your tattoo is "part of your identity" and that there are all sorts of negative and untrue stereotypes about those who sport them. You're absolutely right, of course, but please take heed of a recent Careerbuilders study in which 42 percent of managers said their opinion of a job candidate is lowered by visible tattoos. Three-quarters said tattoos are unprofessional. Remember, you're choosing this job because you want it, right?
Having said that, though, much depends on what kind of job you're applying for: Are you an attorney seeking an executive position with Exxon-Mobil? A software developer interviewing with Google? An actor auditioning for a barista role at Starbucks? Ideally, you'd check out the company beforehand to see how folks dress in general, and for your position specifically. Look at the company's website: How are folks dressed? Do you see any visible tats (or body piercings)? Is there a posted dress code? (Yes, many companies and municipalities still have these.) For instance, the U.S. Postal Service, Starwood Hotels, Geico Insurance, and Denny's won't hire those with visible tattoos, according to their dress code policies. Knowing what kind of work environment you're interviewing in will give you a major clue about whether, and how much, to cover up.
In fact, there are times and industries where visible tats are actually a selling point, especially at companies looking for creativity or individuality, or trying to attract younger workers. A recent Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology article reported that about half of people in their 20s have either a tattoo or a body piercing (not including traditional earrings) and the percentage continues to rise. Fortunately, dress codes continue to evolve.
So have I persuaded you to cover up, at least for the first interview? And after that you can let it all hang out, right? On my Facebook page, one poster suggested that covering up "shows adaptability and maturity, but then once you've got the job go ahead and let your freak flag fly." A gay PR professional in Los Angeles agreed, adding, "I always cover my ink for new business meetings. Once I've had a chance to prove myself for my skills and experience, then I feel it's OK to discuss the [art] work, or have my sleeves rolled up for a meeting."
Alas, not so fast. I wish I could tell you that, once hired, you'd be judged for the work you do, the attitude you bring with you, even your network, and not for your appearance. If only life were like that.
Let's say you're at a company picnic in a tight-fitting T-shirt, revealing that beautiful ink work that crawls down your shoulder and forearm. What happens if your manager (or hers) is one of the Neanderthals when it comes to visible tats? Because most of us are "at-will" employees, you could be fired as a result, with no legal recourse. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission allows employers to impose dress codes as long as they don't discriminate against your race, color, religion, age, national origin, or gender. Visible body art is not delineated, and you are not protected.
Sure, you say that's not likely to happen (and you're right), but it has. Or you could find yourself unexpectedly fired for another reason. Personal use of email at work is one of the most common excuses these days. Even if you don't get fired, you could find yourself slipping in your manager's estimation, which could stunt your job growth.
If it's crucial to you to show off your ink, then be prepared for any possible consequences. That may be OK with you, as this Facebook poster wrote, "I personally never want to work for a company ... that wouldn't accept me for the work I do rather than the work I've had done on my body. I know that that might be a bit idealistic, but it's just the way I think about it."
Or you could take your boyfriend's advice (and mine) and cover up until you're sure the coast is clear, if it ever is, saving the tat display for your personal time.

UFO sighting: Recently uploaded video of a UFO flying over South Korea raises some red flags.
An airplane passenger videoed a mysterious oval white object flying over Seoul, South Korea, April 7. The video has been lighting up the Internet since, and of course many people are offering extraterrestrial explanations.
Skip to next paragraphAs is de rigueur these days, the UFO clip was uploaded to YouTube, where it has been viewed millions of times. Some comments say it's clearly an extraterrestrial spacecraft; others insist it's a fake. Still others say it's neither but instead is a real object ? such as a plastic bag in the wind, a parachute seen from above, or a drop of water on the window ? that simply looks strange from that angle.
Aside from the anonymity of the cameraman, the video raises some red flags about its authenticity. For one thing, the video is not complete; it has been purposely edited to leave some information out. We know this because it begins in progress, with the UFO already well in frame, in the lower right-hand corner. The video camera didn't suddenly turn on to capture that scene; there must be at least some video that was recorded the first few seconds of the camera being turned on or the cameraman pointing the camera out the window. This type of selective editing is common among UFO hoax videos.
There's also the fact that the cameraman waits almost seven seconds before he mentions the UFO to his companion. It's clearly present, and it would be hard to keep your reaction to yourself if you were watching while you were videotaping.
Perhaps most strange, even though he clearly spots the UFO, the cameraman makes no effort to follow the object after it zooms up and out of frame; instead he videotapes more or less the same area of sky for the remaining 10 seconds of the clip. While these internal clues suggest something's not right with the video, the question remains: Was it a real object? Some of the most popular explanations don't fit the facts. A plastic bag, for example, would be unlikely to reach that altitude (and would not appear that large), and a parachute could not move as seen in the video.
The best earthly explanation for the UFO is that it's a droplet of water on the outside of the window being pushed up by airflow coming from under the fuselage. This would explain why the UFO is out of focus: because it's close to the lens. It would not, however, explain why the UFO appears to maintain a constant shape. Droplets of water, especially when subjected to high pressure, tend to deform and leave droplet trails as they move across a smooth surface. This one does not.
Then there's the fact that the light and shadow pattern on the blurry white object doesn't change as it moves. It's almost as if the UFO intentionally maintained exactly the same angle toward the camera the whole time ? not impossible, but highly suspicious.
Absent a terrestrial explanation, we turned to Derek Serra, a Hollywood visual effects artist who has analyzed previous UFO videos. Serra said he finds several elements in this South Korean UFO video that "scream fake," including that "the motion blur was done by an amateur," he told Life's Little Mysteries. "When the camera zooms in a bit, and when the UFO flies off screen, you can seen 'ghosting' of the image. Actual motion blur of real, three-dimensional objects creates a smooth gradient, not a stuttered ghosting like we see in this video. It is something we make sure we do right when working on shots for TV and film."
Though all signs point to a hoax, it's possible that alien spacecraft technology is so advanced that the spacecraft have the sneaky ability to appear on our cameras looking exactly like faked video images.

The latest in the never-ending story of Android security is out, and this time it's talking about what an app can access if it declares no permissions. (To put it another way, what all an application can see if it doesn't request any of the normal functionality apps request.) Some folks make it out to be nothing to worry about, others use it in their quest to damnify the world's most popular mobile phone OS, but we figure the best thing to do with it is explain what's happening.
A group of security researchers set out to create an app that declares no permissions to find out exactly what sort of information they could get out of from the Android system it was running on. This sort of thing is done every day, and the more popular the target is, the more people are looking at it. We actually want them to do this sort of thing, and from time to time folks find things that are critical and need fixed. Everybody benefits.
This time around, they found that an app with no (as in none, nada, zilch) permissions could do three very interesting things. None are serious, but all are worth looking at a bit. We'll start with the SD card.
Any app can read data on your SD card. It's always been this way, and it will always be this way. (Writing to the SD card is what needs a permission.) Utilities are available to create secure, hidden folders and protect them from other apps, but by default any data written to the SD card is there for any app to see. This is by design, as we want to allow our computer to access all the data on shareable partitions (like SD cards) when we plug them in. Newer versions of Android use a different partitioning method and a different way to share data that moves away from this, but then we all get to bitch about using MTP. (Unless you're Phil, but he's a little nuts at likes MTP.) This is an easy fix -- don't put sensitive data on your SD card. Don't use apps that put sensitive data on your SD card. Then quit worrying about programs being able to see data they are supposed to be able to see.
The next thing they found is really interesting if you're a geek -- an can read the /data/system/packages.list file with no explicit permission. This poses no threat on its own, but knowing what applications a user has installed is a great way to know what exploits may be useful to compromise their phone or tablet. Think of vulnerabilities in other apps -- the example the researchers used was Skype. Knowing that an exploit exists it's there means an attacker could try to target it. It's worth mentioning that targeting a known insecure app would probably require some permissions to do so, though. (And it's also worth reminding folks that Skype quickly acknowledged and fixed its permissions issue.)
Finally, they discovered that the /proc directory gives a bit of data when queried. Their example shows that they can read things like the Android ID, kernel version, and ROM version. There's a lot more that can be found in the /proc directory, but we need to remember that /proc isn't a real file system. Look at yours with root explorer -- it's full of 0-byte files that are created at runtime, and is designed for apps and software to communicate with the running kernel. There is no real sensitive data stored there, and it's all erased and rewritten when the phone is power cycled. If you are worried that someone might be able to find your kernel version or 16 digit Android ID, you still have the hurdle of getting that information sent anywhere without explicit Internet permissions.
We're glad that people are digging in deep to find these sort of issues, and while these aren't critical by any serious definition, it's good to make Google aware of them. Researchers doing this sort of work can only make things safer and better for all of us. And we need to stress the point that the fellows at Leviathan aren't talking doom and gloom, they are just presenting facts in a useful way -- the doom and gloom is coming from outside sources.

At a golf resort in suburban Johannesburg, a group of men lounged by the pool. They cheered as five competitors sprinted around a grassy field ? in Speedo swimsuits ? to the sounds of "Yellow Polka Dot Bikini."
This was sports day at Mr. Gay World 2012.
Gay men from 22 countries took part, and this year's competition was noteworthy because it was the first time it was held on African soil. It addition, it also marked the first time that black African men participated, though there were just two.
Mr. Gay World was a five-day competition that includes a wide range of events. They included physical fitness tests, interviews and, of course, the nightwear and swimsuit competitions.
Looking For A Global Representative
Coenie Kukkuk, a co-founder of Mr. Gay South Africa who helped organize this year's event, said it's not about finding a pretty face or rock-hard abs ? though that doesn't hurt.

"This is not a beauty pageant," he says. "It is a search for an LGBTI [lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex] representative and an ambassador. There's no age limit; they have to do written tests and have knowledge ? even in part of the sports challenge today, the clues were questions about LGBTI history and LGBTI rights."
Kukkuk says the organizers were excited to hold the event in Africa and hope it will bring attention to the challenges that gays and lesbians here face.
"In 37 countries, out of the 52 in Africa, it is still illegal just to be gay," he said.
Wendelinus Hamutenya, a 23-year-old nurse and midwife from Namibia, was one of just two black Africans in the competition. He says it's difficult for African men to participate and still be accepted at home. His own family refused to believe he was gay for a long time.
When he was a teenager, "The first time I told my parents that I am gay, I [was] taken to the mental institution," he said. He sneaked out of that institution; eventually, his family members decided to accept him, and they gave him full support for his participation in the competition.
Ethiopian Contestant Fears For His Safety
The other black participant, an Ethiopian graduate student named Robel Hailu, hasn't been as fortunate. Rather than telling his family he was gay, he let them read about the competition in the newspapers. That was nearly two months ago.
"I don't have any communication with them," he said. "Not only my family; my relatives, my best friends, a lot of people."
And he says he's scared to return to Ethiopia, where homosexuality is illegal. He fears he'll be imprisoned by the government or worse.
"If I go back home, they arrest me," he says. "I don't have the right to go back home."
Africa wasn't the only region that had thin representation. Asia, the Middle East and Eastern Europe had a noticeable lack of competitors, all of them regions where gays are still stigmatized.
Around sub-Saharan Africa, some governments are taking a stand against homosexuality.
Nigeria recently banned same-sex marriages and made it illegal to work with LGBT groups ? a move that could hamper AIDS prevention efforts.
Uganda removed the death penalty from a proposed anti-gay bill but may still impose lengthy jail sentences.

And in South Africa, where homosexual rights are strongly protected, many gays and lesbians are still highly stigmatized, attacked and even killed.
Hints Of Growing Tolerance
But Graeme Reid, the director of the LGBT Rights Program for Human Rights Watch in New York, says there are also signs of growing tolerance.
"I think Rwanda's a good example in which, when there was a proposal to introduce discriminatory legislation, that the minister of justice stood up very clearly," he said. "Kenya, with its new constitution, is more open to protecting human rights. Botswana is open to new dialogue and discussion."
At a U.N. meeting in Geneva last month, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon sent a powerful message to LGBT people around the world.
"To those who are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender, let me say, you are not alone," Ban said. "Your struggle for an end to violence and discrimination is a shared struggle."
Meanwhile, South Africa has introduced a resolution that would force countries to provide equal rights to all, regardless of gender or sexual orientation.
Reid from Human Rights Watch says the fact that South Africa introduced the resolution has made a huge difference.
"Because here's this African nation, leading this discussion around sexual orientation and gender identity," he said. "It's a very different dynamic than if it was a former colonial power, for instance, initiating the discussion."
He says African nations are also feeling pressure from Latin America and parts of Asia ? places that used to abstain from such discussions.
Back at the pageant, the five finalists stood onstage in suits, sashes draped over their shoulders. Then came the announcement that the winner was ... Andreas Derleth, 32, of New Zealand.
Hailu of Ethiopia didn't make the finals but says he'll continue fighting for LGBT rights.
"I have a [big] job to do for Ethiopia, and for African LGBT rights," he says.
But getting back into his country ? and staying safe ? could be a challenging first step.
