Samsung?s HomeSync 1TB Android-based media server streams apps to your TV, keeps your data in sync

Samsung?s HomeSync 1TB Android-based media server streams apps to your TV, keeps your data in sync

Samsung makes phones, tablets, and televisions that can run apps. Now the company is also offering a set-top-box that can bring Android apps to your TV, let you stream content from your mobile device to a TV, or keep your data synchronized between devices.

It?s called the Samsung HomeSync, and it?s a home media server with a 1.7 GHz dual core processor, 1GB of RAM, an 8GB solid state drive, and a 1TB hard drive.

Samsung HomeSync

The HomeSync is expected to ship in select countries starting in April, 2013.

The device features WiFi, Bluetooth and Ethernet support, 2 USB 3.0 ports for peripherals, a micro USB port for connecting to a PC, and HDMI output for hooking up a TV or monitor.

Under the hood, the HomeSync is running software based on Google Android Jelly Bean, which means you can use it to watch movies on the hard drive or stream videos from YouTube, among other things. It also includes access to the Google Play Store, which should let you download additional apps such as Netflix or Vudu to turn the HomeSync into a pretty powerful media center for your TV.

Samsung says you can also link up to 8 accounts to the HomeSync so you can synchronize data across your devices or access shared or private storage. In other words, you can keep your music and movie collection on the HomeSync?s 1TB hard drive and use each of your family?s phones to access a different set of media files for each user.

Samsung hasn?t yet revealed how much the HomeSync will cost.

One victim's grim account of 'modern-day slavery'

By Marion Brooks, NBCChicago.com

CHICAGO -- Alex Campbell was an expert in his field, according to authorities.

His "field" was the underground world of human trafficking, known familiarly as pimping and prostitution, and Campbell, according to investigators with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, was a master pimp.

"On a scale of one to 10, he?d be a 12," said DHS investigator Gary Hartwig. "I?ve been in law enforcement for 24 years, and he is actually the worst case of human trafficking we?ve identified in Chicago. Probably nationally."

Prosecutors call Campbell a "predator" and say he targeted foreign-born women with questionable legal status. They say he?d use their precarious status, coupled with heavy doses of violence and intimidation, to control the women and force them into "a form of modern-day slavery."

Last November a federal judge sentenced Campbell to life in prison. It?s believed to be the first time a "pimp" has been sentenced to life in prison for human trafficking in federal court in Chicago.

The federal case against Campbell was bolstered by four women who came forward to testify against him in court. In an effort to protect her identity, NBC Chicago will identify one woman only as "Sarah."

'It still hurts so bad'
In a sit-down interview late last month, Sarah said was completely controlled by Campbell to the point where she felt she might lose her life if she dared to disobey him.

"He told me many times that he would kill me," she recalled.

Prosecutors believe Campbell was grooming Sarah to become a prostitute. It started, they say, with Campbell giving her a legitimate job at one of his Chicago-area massage parlors. They say he then became her friend and eventually her boyfriend. Attorneys say he then began to isolate her and beat her. Then he literally branded her.

"I still have those tattoos, and I can?t get rid of them," Sarah said. "I?m trying to remove them for a long time -- like two years -- and they are still not coming off. It still hurts so bad."

Investigators say Campbell branded most all of his victims. On one woman, they say he tattooed an manifesto so long it covered almost her entire back.

"For him, it let the world know that these women belonged to him," said assistant United States Attorney Diane MacArthur, part of the team that prosecuted Campbell.

Steve Grimes, another assistant U.S. Attorney, said the women would have to explain the markings on their bodies for the rest of their lives anytime they met someone new.

"That was part of his plan," said Grimes.

More news from NBCChicago.com

In court, prosecutors also alleged that Campbell would exact fines from the women he controlled. In the case of one victim, he levied a fine of $14,000 for her to get a green card. She got another $5,000 "fine" simply because she didn?t call him.

A recording of a phone call between Campbell and that woman was played in open court:

Woman: "You telling me that I didn?t call you, that?s why I have to give you $5,000?"

Campbell: "I said you got to give me $5,000 ... and you gonna pay it ---."

Woman: "Yes. You told me --"

Campbell: " ... because you are -- listen! This is my last word to you, and you?d better be glad I?m giving you up to f---ing Sunday to f---ing bring a f---ing-a-s payment in. If you don?t f---ing bring in at least $500 mother-f---ing dollars, we will go to f---ing war. Now get my mother-f---ing money."

Sarah said that in Campbell?s world, beatings were common and intimidation was constant. He even used blackmail, she said, taking a page right from one of two books investigators found in his possession: "The Pimp?s Bible."

"[Sarah] tried to get away," said Grimes. "He forced her to drink alcohol and made her have sex with another woman while he videotaped this. He then threatened to send that video to her family, to expose her, if she did not come back into his grasp."

In court documents, attorneys for Campbell said he maintained his innocence and challenged the allegation that Sarah and others were being held against their will.

"Each expected something from him," Campbell?s attorneys state in the court documents. "Each was more than happy to accept what he gave; all this before the relationships turned ugly."

Prosecutors and investigators said they're pleased with the fact that Campbell received a life sentence in court.

"In the truest form of the word, he is a predator," said Grimes.

Sarah eventually escaped from Campbell and reported him to police. She is now married and doing well.

And if someone thinks it can?t happen to them, Sarah says to think again.

"It happens," she said. "It can happen easily to anyone."

Indicators of Human Trafficking:

  • Is the victim in possession of identification and travel documents? If not, who has control of the documents?
  • Was the victim coached on what to say to law enforcement and immigration officials?
  • Was the victim recruited for one purpose and forced to engage in some other job?
  • Is the victim's salary being garnished to pay off a smuggling fee? (Paying off a smuggling fee alone is not considered trafficking.)
  • Was the victim forced to perform sexual acts?
  • Does the victim have freedom of movement?
  • Has the victim or family been threatened with harm if the victim attempts to escape?
  • Has the victim been threatened with deportation or law enforcement action?
  • Has the victim been harmed or deprived of food, water, sleep, medical care or other life necessities?
  • Can the victim freely contact friends or family?
  • Is the victim a juvenile engaged in commercial sex?
  • Is the victim allowed to socialize or attend religious services?

If you have any evidence of human trafficking, or if you are aware of anyone who is being exploited for prostitution, you should call investigators at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security at 1-866-347-2423.

'Nonstop shouting' at Pistorius home

PRETORIA (Reuters) - A witness heard "non-stop shouting" in the home of athletics star Oscar Pistorius shortly before his girlfriend was shot dead, the lead detective in the murder investigation said on Wednesday.

Warrant officer Hilton Botha, a detective with 24 years on the force, also told the Pretoria magistrates court that police had found two containers of testosterone and needles in Pistorius' bedroom.

Pistorius, a double amputee dubbed "Blade Runner" because he raced on carbon fiber blades, sobbed uncontrollably as Botha presented his testimony about the death of Reeva Steenkamp, 29.

The law graduate and model was in the toilet of the athlete's home when she was shot dead.

The shooting and allegations that have emerged at the bail hearing have stunned South Africa and millions of people around the world who regarded Pistorius, who has no lower legs, as the epitome of sporting triumph over adversity.

"One of our witnesses heard a fight, two people talking loudly at each other ... from two in the morning to three," Botha told the court.

In an affidavit delivered on Tuesday, Pistorius said he woke in the middle of the night and thought an intruder had climbed through his bathroom window and entered the adjoining toilet.

The 26-year-old said he grabbed a 9-mm pistol from under his bed and went into the bathroom.

Pistorius - the highest-profile athlete in the history of the Paralympics - then described how he fired into the locked toilet door in a blind panic in the belief the intruder was lurking inside.

In his testimony on Wednesday, Botha disputed Pistorius' affidavit.

TRAJECTORY

"I believe he knew she (Steenkamp) was in the bathroom and he shot four shots through the door," the detective said, adding the angle at which the rounds were fired suggested they were aimed deliberately at somebody on the toilet.

Pistorius had said he moved into the bathroom on his stumps - the reason he felt so vulnerable - but Botha said the shots went in a "top to bottom" trajectory, suggesting Pistorius was wearing his artificial legs when he pulled the trigger.

"It seems to me it was fired down," he said.

Botha also cited another witness on the upscale gated community near Pretoria where Pistorius lived as saying he heard a shot, followed 17 minutes later by more shots.

Another witness also spoke of a shot followed by screams, followed by more shots, he said.

Steenkamp was hit in the head, arm and hip in the locker-sized toilet room adjoining the bathroom, which itself led from the bedroom.

Pistorius' defense team disputed Botha's reference to "testosterone", saying the substance was a legitimate herbal remedy called "testo-composutim co-enzyme".

Details on the makeup of testo-composutim co-enzyme were not immediately available but administering testosterone as an anabolic agent is banned at all times under World Anti-Doping Agency rules for sports people.

ANGER

At Steenkamp's funeral in the south coast city of Port Elizabeth on Tuesday, grief was tinged with anger.

"I'm disgusted with what he did. He must be dealt with harshly," said Gavin Venter, an ex-jockey who worked for Steenkamp's father. "Without a doubt he's a danger to the public. He'll be a danger to witnesses. He must stay in jail."

The case has drawn further attention to endemic violence against women in South Africa after the gang-rape, mutilation and murder of a 17-year-old near Cape Town this month.

Members of the Women's League of the ruling African National Congress protested outside the Pretoria court, waving placards saying: "No Bail for Pistorius" and "Rot in jail".

The arrest of Pistorius stunned the millions who had watched in awe last year as the Olympic and Paralympic sprinter reached the semi-final of the 400 meters in the London Olympics.

But the impact has been greatest in sports-mad South Africa, where Pistorius was seen as a rare hero who had transcended the racial divides that persist 19 years after the end of apartheid.

He carried South Africa's flag at the closing ceremony of the London Olympics, and U.S. magazine Sports Illustrated named him as one of the most inspiring figures of the year.

"Many questions are being asked, but we have no answers," Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula said in a statement.

The sprinter's endorsements and sponsorships included sportswear giant Nike, British telecoms firm BT, sunglasses maker Oakley and French designer Thierry Mugler and were thought to be worth as much as $2 million a year.

In his affidavit, Pistorius said he earned 5.6 million rand ($630,500) a year and owned properties worth nearly $1 million.

However, Nike and Mugler both said they had dropped Pistorius from advertising campaigns, while cosmetics firm Clarins said it was recalling its "A Man" perfume range out of "respect and compassion towards the families involved".

Alabama House passes bill tightening restrictions on abortion clinics

MOBILE, Alabama (Reuters) - The Alabama House of Representatives passed legislation on Tuesday that would tighten regulations for abortion clinics in a move critics say could force many in the state to close.

The Republican-controlled House approved the bill in a 73-23 vote. The bill now moves to the Senate, which also has a Republican majority, for consideration.

The bill, called The Women's Health and Safety Act, would mandate that an Alabama-licensed physician be present at every abortion and those doctors would be required to have admitting privileges at local hospitals.

In Mississippi, the state's lone abortion clinic has filed a lawsuit to halt a new state law similar to the bill passed in Alabama, arguing it is unconstitutional and saying it will eventually lead to its closure.

Supporters of the Alabama bill say it is intended to make abortion clinics meet the same standards as hospitals and would ensure the safety of women who choose to have abortions.

A proposed amendment that would have prohibited hospitals from denying admitting privileges to abortion doctors solely because they performed the procedures was voted down by lawmakers.

Under current law, abortion clinics partner with local doctors who have hospital admitting privileges to provide follow-up care.

"This truly is a women's rights bill," state Representative Mary Sue McClurkin, a Republican who sponsored the legislation, said in a statement. "It protects the right of a woman having an abortion to have it in a safe and healthy environment.

However, some Democrats said they worry it could eventually force the closure of abortion clinics.

"At the end of the day, we need to make sure we are not imposing some type of restriction on abortion that would put a woman's right to choose in jeopardy," Representative Juandalynn Givan told TV channel WSFA.

Marco Rubio trashes President Obama's immigration plan as DOA

That didn't take long. A few hours after President Obama proposed an immigration plan, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio trashed it.

How much of this is real, and how much political posturing?

The press release:

Washington, D.C. - U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) issued the following statement regarding new details about President Obama?s immigration plan, as first reported by USA Today.

?It?s a mistake for the White House to draft immigration legislation without seeking input from Republican members of Congress. President Obama?s leaked immigration proposal is disappointing to those of us working on a serious solution. The President?s bill repeats the failures of past legislation. It fails to follow through on previously broken promises to secure our borders, creates a special pathway that puts those who broke our immigration laws at an advantage over those who chose to do things the right way and come here legally, and does nothing to address guest workers or future flow, which serious immigration experts agree is critical to preventing future influxes of illegal immigrants.

?Much like the President?s self-described ?stop gap? Deferred Action measure last year, this legislation is half-baked and seriously flawed. It would actually make our immigration problems worse, and would further undermine the American people?s confidence in Washington?s ability to enforce our immigration laws and reform our broken immigration system.

?If actually proposed, the President?s bill would be dead on arrival in Congress, leaving us with unsecured borders and a broken legal immigration system for years to come.?

Dating Dos That Lead to Good Marriages

Our middle son recently announced his engagement to a young woman he has been friends with since childhood and dated for nearly four years. My husband and I are grateful for the way in which Luke and Audrey have discerned their engagement and their plans for a Church wedding this May.

In our house, group dating may begin at age 16, but one-on-one dating is forbidden until age 18. Our reasoning is that dating is a prelude to marriage, and no one should date who isn?t ready to begin the search and make the commitment to marriage.

Dating and discernment are important and require the right intentions and approaches, based on individual personalities and holy purpose.

Gregory Popcak, who, with his wife, Lisa, authored Beyond the Birds and the Bees: Raising Sexually Whole and Holy Kids (Ascension Press, 2012), says that age is less important than maturity when it comes to dating.

"It?s more about having accomplished certain developmental and moral tasks," he said.

Popcak recommends that parents ask themselves certain questions when deciding whether and when to allow their children to date, including: Does my child know how to be friends with the opposite sex? Do I know my child to be a moral and spiritual leader among his/her peers?

"The more you see your child demonstrating these traits at home ? with you and his/her siblings and friends ? the more you can safely assume that your child is ready to date," he added.

Dating plays a vital role in the marriage-discernment process, giving young people experiences with the opposite gender so that they can learn what types of personalities may be a good match for them.

For Stu and Liz Sigmund of Oconomowoc, Wis., dating was an indispensable factor in their marriage discernment. The Sigmunds dated for four years and were engaged for one before marrying in 2011. They have a 7-month-old daughter.

When they began dating, Stu was 23 and Liz was 21; neither had seriously dated anyone before, and that?s the way they both preferred it. They also both were discerning vocations to the religious life, with Liz being more certain that she was called to marriage, but Stu still divided between marriage and the priesthood.

"There?s no reason to date someone you don?t really think you would marry someday," said Liz. "I used to actually tell my mom that I was only going to date the person that I was going to marry. That turned out to be true for me."

The Sigmunds also point out that dating is about family: learning to live with each other?s families, which sometimes can be quite difficult, and preparing to form a new one together.

"Something I always felt to be important for a good relationship is for each spouse to be accepted and supported by the other?s family, and our dating time was often centered on the time spent with each other?s family. How could I have ever expected Liz to marry me and become a part of my family if she didn?t know firsthand what that was going to mean?" Stu said. "Plus, I always have believed that marriage is about family. Anyone who is not interested in having or being a family has no business getting married."

Even after spending time together and with one another?s families, how does one know whether the person he/she is dating is the one God has intended to be his/her spouse?

God intends marriage to be based on authentic love, aimed at bringing one another closer to Christ.

As Pope Pius XI noted in his encyclical Casti Connubii (On Christian Marriage): "To the proximate preparation of a good married life belongs very specially the care in choosing a partner; on that depends a great deal whether the forthcoming marriage will be happy or not, since one may be to the other either a great help in leading a Christian life or a great danger and hindrance. And so that they may not deplore for the rest of their lives the sorrows arising from an indiscreet marriage, those about to enter into wedlock should carefully deliberate in choosing the person with whom henceforward they must live continually: They should, in so deliberating, keep before their minds the thought first of God and of the true religion of Christ, then of themselves, of their partner, of the children to come, as also of human and civil society, for which wedlock is a fountain head.

"Let them diligently pray for Divine help, so that they make their choice in accordance with Christian prudence, not indeed led by the blind and unrestrained impulse of lust, nor by any desire of riches or other base influence, but by a true and noble love and by a sincere affection for the future partner; and then let them strive in their married life for those ends for which the state was constituted by God.

"Lastly, let them not omit to ask the prudent advice of their parents with regard to the partner, and let them regard this advice in no light manner, in order that, by their mature knowledge and experience of human affairs, they may guard against a disastrous choice and, on the threshold of matrimony, may receive more abundantly the divine blessing of the Fourth Commandment: ?Honor thy father and thy mother, (which is the first commandment with a promise), that it may be well with thee and thou mayest be long-lived upon the earth.?"

"He/she will unleash in you the best, highest and most virtuous version of yourself," explained author and speaker Mark Hart, executive vice president of Life Teen International. Hart is also known as the "Bible Geek." He and his wife have three young children. "Marriage, and dating before that, is not about finding ?someone you can live with.? It?s about finding someone you desire to die for daily ? to die to yourself, your selfish wants and human sins ? and seek to live for the other. Dating and marriage are not about what we ?get,? but about what we give."

Real love, says the Sigmunds, isn?t something to take for granted. They encourage young couples who are dating and discerning marriage to surround themselves with people who have positive feelings about marriage, go to Mass and adoration together and participate in activities that make it easier for them to learn and grow deeper in their faith together.

"Don?t use the word ?love? casually," Liz advised. "Make it deliberate, and wait until you really know. I know I wanted to say it so quickly, but I waited until Stu said it, because I knew that he needed time to accept it. Also know that the devil will try to break up a good relationship; he is not happy when you are faithful to God and your significant other."

And parents help their children to discern true love by modeling healthy and holy love themselves.

"Parents should be affectionate in front of their kids," Hart advised. "They should model healthy communication, even healthy ?arguing? and ?disagreeing,? constant gentleness, mercy, compassion and mutual respect. In short, parents should ?become? the person they desire their children to ?bring home.?"

Above all else, prayer is a top priority in dating and marriage discernment, according to all sources interviewed for this article.

Southern Californian Leslie Lenko depended on prayer and the sacraments to guide her through a tough discernment process before marrying her husband of 20 years. The Lenkos have two teenage children.

"I remember many times, after work, driving to a beautiful Catholic church for prayer. I took great comfort in praying before a statue of holy Mother Mary," she said. "I had a broken engagement two years prior, and I needed to be very sure this time. I also went to Mass a great deal, took long walks and asked many questions."

One day, while attending Mass with her future husband, she received a sign; shortly thereafter, they became engaged.

"The graces are many for those who discern well," Lenko said.

Added Stu Sigmund: "It takes a lot of silent prayer and reflection to hear what God has written into your heart. We are called to love our spouse as Christ loved the Church.

"He loved us when it felt like being gathered around the table with good food and conversation with friends, but he carried that love right through from there, on to when it felt like hatred, betrayal, thorns in his head, nails through his hands and his blood pouring on the ground. If we can choose to love someone like that, not knowing how it could ever be possible, but trusting that if that is what God asks of us, then he will give us what we need to do it, then marriage is possible and wonderful and full of his incredible blessings."

Governor: Radioactive liquid leaking at Hanford site

U.S. Department Of Energy

The disposal facility for mixed and low-level radioactive waste at the Hanford Nuclear Reservation in Washington state is shown in an aerial image.

By Mike Baker and Shannon Dininny, The Associated Press

OLYMPIA, Wash. -- A tank that holds radioactive liquids is leaking at the nation's most contaminated nuclear site, Wash. Gov. Jay Inslee said Friday, raising concerns about the integrity of other storage facilities at the Hanford Nuclear Reservation.

The U.S. Department of Energy said liquid levels are decreasing in one of 177 underground tanks at the nuclear reservation. Monitoring wells near the tank have not detected higher radiation levels, the agency said. Inslee said the leak could be in the range of 150 gallons to 300 gallons over the course of a year.

"I am alarmed about this on many levels," Inslee said at a Friday afternoon news conference. "This raises concerns, not only about the existing leak ... but also concerning the integrity of the other single shell tanks of this age."

The tanks hold millions of gallons of a highly radioactive stew left from decades of plutonium production for nuclear weapons.

Inslee said the state was told such problems had been dealt with years ago and were under control.

Energy Secretary Steven Chu said the federal government must not waiver in its commitment to clean up the highly contaminated site, Inslee told reporters.

The tank in question contains about 447,000 gallons of sludge, a mixture of solids and liquids with a mud-like consistency. The tank, built in the 1940s, is known to have leaked in the past, but was stabilized in 1995 when all liquids that could be pumped out of it were removed.

Inslee said the tank is the first to have been documented to be losing liquids since all Hanford tanks were stabilized in 2005.

At the height of World War II, the federal government created Hanford in the remote sagebrush of eastern Washington as part of a hush-hush project to build the atomic bomb. The site ultimately produced plutonium for the world's first atomic blast and for one of two atomic bombs dropped on Japan, effectively ending the war.

Plutonium production continued there through the Cold War, but today, Hanford is the nation's most contaminated nuclear site. Cleanup will cost billions of dollars and last decades.

Central to that cleanup is the removal of millions of gallons of a highly toxic, radioactive stew ? enough to fill dozens of Olympic-size swimming pools ? from 177 aging, underground tanks. Over time, many of those tanks have leaked, threatening the groundwater and the neighboring Columbia River, the largest waterway in the Pacific Northwest.

Construction of a $12.3 billion plant to convert the waste to a safe, stable form is years behind schedule and billions of dollars over budget. Technical problems have slowed the project, and several workers have raised lawsuits in recent months, claiming they were retaliated against for raising concerns about the plant's design and safety.

Grad loses in C+ lawsuit against Lehigh University

Lehigh spokesperson speaks about Megan Thode losing in C+ lawsuit against Lehigh University

A Northampton County judge on Thursday rejected the claims of a Lehigh University graduate suing over her C+ grade, a verdict that upheld the school's insistence that she earned the mark she got.

After four days of testimony in a civil trial that captured worldwide attention, Judge Emil Giordano decided that the Bethlehem university neither breached a contract with nor sexually discriminated against Megan Thode, whose lawsuit had sought $1.3 million in damages.

In reaching his conclusions, Giordano said that as a father, he would be unhappy if what happened to Thode at Lehigh had happened to one of his children.

But he said Thode nonetheless failed to prove her grade was based on anything other than "purely academic evaluation" and her professor's conclusion that she "was unprepared to move on to the next level" of her course.

Thode, the daughter of Lehigh finance professor Stephen Thode, was attending the university tuition-free in 2009 when she got the C+ in her master's fieldwork class. She needed a B or higher to take the next course, with her attorney, Richard J. Orloski, arguing that his client's dream of becoming a licensed professional counselor was unfairly scuttled as a result.

The legal fight pitted a university that maintained it must protect its academic standards against a graduate who claimed she was deprived of a career by faculty members with a grudge. It was a bruising battle under a spotlight that shone as far as Australia and the United Kingdom. Both sides lamented that the case had ended up in court.

The verdict upholds that "the university faculty have the responsibility to fairly evaluate the work of their students, and that academic rigor should not be compromised," said Gary Sasso, dean of Lehigh's College of Education.

"We feel very badly for Megan Thode," Sasso said. "We hope that in the future she goes forward and does good things. We remain open to conversations with her about her readmission into that program, into our program, and into that class."

Sasso added: "Nobody really won in this case. We felt like it shouldn't have gotten this far, but it did."

Orloski called the result disappointing, while expressing doubt that Thode will pursue an appeal. Like university officials, he said it was a case that shouldn't have wound up in a courtroom ? though he charged Lehigh brought that about by rejecting his requests to put the dispute before an arbiter.

Orloski said he knew the lawsuit was "an uphill battle" with "little old us against Lehigh."

"Is it worth it to try, and lose?" Orloski asked. "Of course. It keeps the system honest, even by losing."

Thode, 27, of Nazareth appeared to fight tears as she sat near Orloski while he spoke. The lawyer said his client was always more optimistic than he was, having "greater faith in my talents than I did."

"It has been a very difficult 31/2 years for Megan," Stephen Thode said, "and Rick has been marvelous, not only in his official capacity as counsel, but also as someone who Megan saw as understanding of her situation, beyond the legal aspects of it."

At trial, Lehigh lawyers Neil Hamburg and Michael Sacks argued that Thode was simply not academically and emotionally ready to move on to her next fieldwork course. They said she showed unprofessional behavior that included outbursts and swearing in class.

After getting the grade, Thode unsuccessfully filed internal grievances, showed up for meetings with her father, and insisted that her teacher, Amanda Carr, give her a written apology and a "plan for compensating me financially," Lehigh said.

Orloski argued Thode would have received a better grade but for the zero in classroom participation that Carr awarded her. He charged that Carr and Nicholas Ladany ? then director of the degree program ? conspired to hold Thode back because they were unhappy she'd complained after she and three other students were forced to find a supplemental internship partway through the semester.

Orloski also alleged that Carr was biased against Thode because Thode advocated for gay and lesbian rights ? a claim Lehigh's attorneys dismissed as baseless because Carr has a close family member who is a lesbian, and has counseled gay and lesbian people.

Thode ended up graduating from Lehigh with a master's degree in human development and now works as a drug-and-alcohol counselor. The $1.3 million she was seeking represented the difference in her earning power over her career if she had a professional license, according to Orloski.

On Thursday during closing arguments, however, Orloski insisted that the case was never about money. He said Thode would be happy if she was awarded just $1 but got her grade upped to a B.

"My clients will be well satisfied by this, and this will be victory for them," Orloski had promised Giordano, "because this was never intended to be about $1.3 million."

Hamburg, the Lehigh attorney, told Giordano that the courts have long deferred to academic institutions to determine what grades they should award. Hamburg said Thode earned her C+ by showing an inability to self-reflect and take and respond to criticism, which he argued that she proved by pursuing the litigation.

"It is horrible, and we at Lehigh feel horrible that Ms. Thode chose to bring this lawsuit, to subject herself and Lehigh University to the horror of having a court sit to decide her grievances," Hamburg said. "It's tragic."

Cover Letter For Accountants | Welcome to thegoldseat.com

The first step in the resume review process, for most companies, is to have the human resource department review?

An accountant is considered by the population to become a boring, tedious job. However, the resume cover letter used to have that career shouldn?t be. The same as every other cover letter, an accountants ought to be obvious, concise, and get attention. Nevertheless, there are a few extremely important differences between an accountant employment cover letter and one compiled by other career candidates|one published by other job people and very important differences between an accountant employment cover letter}.

The first faltering step in the application review process, for most companies, is to have the human resource department review all applicant articles and then hand the ones who qualify down to the hiring manager. Which means a free account cover letter must develop on specifics of the job. In order to find out which specifics one needs to include, {they should evaluate the job application or set in a call to the business in order to research the needs|in order to analyze the needs they should evaluate the resume or set in a call to the organization}. But, do not create a cover letter which is really a factual listing of skills. That is for the application.

resume cover letter is examined by the human resource department, they are generally given a listing of qualifications a candidate must have, since they are maybe not overtly acquainted with the accountant field|since they?re perhaps not overtly knowledgeable about the accountant industry, since the cover letter is evaluated by the human resource department, they are generally given a list of qualifications a candidate needs to have}|They?re usually given a listing of qualifications an applicant must have, because they?re perhaps not overtly acquainted with the accountant field, since the cover letter is assessed by the human resource department}. If types accountant cover letter does not express these qualifications, or uses a generalization of the qualifications, it is likely that it?ll be neglected. Using bullet points in a accountant employment cover letter, or a table for organizing information, can be an effective way to ensure the specific skills one needs to emphasis are observed.

When people cover letter and resume ensure it is out of the hands then a potential for getting an interview has already been well in hand. You can find just a couple other factors when an accountants employment cover letter need to get which will close the offer|when an accountants employment cover letter need certainly to get which will close the offer just a couple of other elements}. resume cover letter should include effective word choices|Effective word choices should be contained by an accountant cover letter} to share passion and efficient communication skills to the potential employer. as an account is mostly about figures, it is also about interaction with a desire and others to prosper in the career|It is also about interaction with others and a desire to do well in the career, while as an account is mainly about figures}. As sometimes appears as boring|an accountant sometimes appears as boring, stated} and a potential employer needs to make sure that the consumer they choose will easily available and desire to excel|want to excel and be easily available}.

Also, an cover letter should request a meeting, the same as every other cover letter. Seeking an interview can be an crucial component. This demonstrates confidence and security to the potential employer, and makes them straight away know whether they would want to consider meeting the job-seeker. An accountant {cover letter should, also, state why their skills is going to be advantageous to the business|Why their skills is likely to be beneficial to the business an accountant cover letter must, also, state}. What is about the accountant which makes them different from another hundred of people? An accountant cover letter should house aspects of character, and know-how, in addition to technical vocabulary that?ll get yourself a hiring administrators attention.

An accountants cover letter, exactly like any other cover letter, should not be universal. You need to not get their cover letter from a theme, or acquire a sample from the web. That is especially crucial regarding an accountants resume cover letter since there is an importance of more specific information. An example cover letter cannot truly define an accountants skills and abilities. In the world of {accounting, there is never as much generality as much people think|as much people think the world of sales, there is not as much generality}. A company features a specific place which they need their accountant to shine, so for this to encounter properly an accountants resume cover letter must ensure they record these things.

Yet another factor that all cover letters must have, including an accountants, is word that compels the reader|the reader that is compelled by a first sentence} to keep. Without this first word an accountants cover letter might be skimmed by the human resource department, and possibly even have the qualities picked out that are expected to send the application to the hiring manager, however it is unlikely to go any further than that. A potential employer wants to, and needs to, locate a job-seeker who gels with the company atmosphere and brings a great deal to the dining table|a great deal to the dining table and will gels with the company atmosphere}. If {an accountants {cover letter doesn?t get their attention|their attention does not be got by an accountants cover letter} after the first point or two, then it?ll be cast aside into the trash bin|Then it will be cast away into the waste bin, if resume cover letter does not manage to get thier attention|their attention does not be got by an accountants cover letter} after the first point or two}.

Therefore remember these tips when writing resume cover letter and the results|the outcomes and an accountant employment cover letter} must certanly be productive|When creating resume cover letter and the outcome|the results and an accountant employment cover letter} should be fruitful so remember these tips}.

LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) ? IOC leaders are meeting this week to decide which sport to drop from the Olympic program and how to deal with the fallout from the Lance Armstrong doping scandal.

At a two-day IOC executive board meeting opening Tuesday, the IOC will also review preparations for the Winter Olympics in Sochi ? less than a year away ? and the 2016 Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro, as well as select a short list of finalists for the 2018 Youth Olympics.

Modern pentathlon, a tradition-steeped contest invented by the founder of the modern Olympics, is expected to face close scrutiny when the board considers which of the current 26 summer Olympic sports to remove from the program of the 2020 Games. Taking out one sport will make way for a new sport to be added to the program later this year.

The executive board will review a report from the IOC program commission assessing each of the sports contested at last summer's London Olympics.

The report analyzes more than three dozen criteria, including television ratings, ticket sales, anti-doping policy and global participation and popularity. With no official rankings or recommendations contained in the report, the final decision by the 15-member executive board will likely be influenced by political, emotional and sentimental factors.

Among the sports considered the most vulnerable is modern pentathlon, which was created for the Olympics by French baron Pierre de Coubertin. It has been on the program since the 1912 Stockholm Games, where George S. Patton ? the future U.S. Army general ? finished fifth.

Modern pentathlon combines fencing, horse riding, swimming, running and shooting ? the five skills required of a 19th century cavalry officer. The sport's governing body, the UIPM, has been lobbying hard to protect its Olympic status.

UIPM President Klaus Schormann said his sport has broadened its appeal with a one-day format while also upholding the traditions of the past and the legacy of De Coubertin.

"The Olympic movement always needs history," he told The Associated Press. "You cannot just say we look only at the future. You can have a future when you are stable on the basic part of history. We are continuing to develop, to renovate, to be innovative and creative. We are very proud of what we achieved so far and want to deliver this as well for the next generations in 2020."

Taekwondo, the Korean martial art that has been in the Olympics since 2000, has also been mentioned as being among the sports in potential danger. The sport introduced a new scoring system in London to eliminate judging controversies and the gold medals, previously dominated by South Koreans, were spread among eight different nations.

The future of wrestling, badminton and table tennis have also been the subject of speculation.

The last sports removed from the Olympics were baseball and softball, voted out by the IOC in 2005 and off the program since the 2008 Beijing Games. Joining the program at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro will be golf and rugby.

Baseball and softball have combined forces to seek inclusion in 2020, competing against karate, squash, roller sports, sport climbing, wakeboarding and wushu. Whichever sport is dropped Tuesday will join those seven vying for the single opening in 2020.

The IOC executive board will meet in May in St. Petersburg, Russia, to decide which sport or sports to propose for 2020 inclusion. The final vote will be made at the IOC general assembly in September in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

This week, the IOC will also discuss the crisis in cycling following the doping revelations that led to Armstrong being stripped of his seven Tour de France titles and banned for life from elite sports. Armstrong was also stripped by the IOC of his bronze medal from the 2000 Sydney Games, though the medal has not yet been returned.

The international cycling federation, the UCI, has been in open conflict with the World Anti-Doping Agency over the terms of any "truth and reconciliation" process offering amnesties to those who come forward with information. UCI President Pat McQuaid has written all IOC members seeking their support. He also is reportedly seeking help to fund the process.

The IOC appears unlikely to get directly involved, seeking instead to encourage the UCI and WADA to work together.

"The IOC could maybe play a role as a kind of facilitator," IOC vice president Thomas Bach told the AP.

On another matter, the IOC will reduce the field of candidates for the 2018 Summer Youth Games. The five bidders are Buenos Aires; Glasgow, Scotland; Guadalajara, Mexico; Medellin, Colombia; and Rotterdam, Netherlands.

At least two are expected to make the list of finalists, with the winner to be announced in June. The first Youth Olympics were held in 2010 in Singapore, with the 2014 edition taking place in Nanjing, China.

Northeast snowstorm blamed for deaths of 18 people

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) ? The massive weekend snowstorm that clobbered parts of the Northeast and Canada is being blamed for at least 18 deaths.

The epic storm swept through on Friday and Saturday with 1 to 3 feet of snow that entombed cars and sealed up driveways. Several people died from carbon monoxide poisoning while sitting in snowed-in vehicles.

Schools remained closed across much of New England and New York on Monday. And more than 100,000 homes and businesses are still waiting for the electricity to come back on. About 650,000 customers had been without power, most of them in Massachusetts.

Marshfield, Mass., residents Jim and Brenda Stewart have been using their fireplace to stay warm. They say New Englanders just hunker down and do it.

Dutch family sues Facebook over 'like' button patent

THE HAGUE: The heirs of a Dutch Internet inventor are suing Facebook for allegedly infringing his patents with the US social networking site's "like" and "share" buttons, court documents seen on Monday said.

The family of Jos Van Der Meer, a computer scientist, programmer and inventor who died in 2004, is bring represented by patent-holding company Rembrandt in the suit brought before a US court in Virginia on February 4.

The suit for unspecified damages claims Facebook's infringement of two related patents filed by Van Der Meer, who is described as "a pioneer in the development of user-friendly web-based technologies", in 1998.

One patent "claimed a novel technology that gave ordinary people... the ability to create and use what Van Der Meer called a personal diary," court papers said.

The system allowed people to "collect personal information and third-party content, organise the information chronologically on a personalised web page and share the information with a selected group of people, such as the user's friends, through the use of user-settable privacy levels."

The second patent is for technology that enables "the automatic transfer, at a user's request, of third-party content from a content provider's website to the user's personal diary page" -- akin to Facebook's "share" or "like" buttons.

Van Der Meer set up a company to commercialise his inventions, Aduna, registered the surfbook.com website, and launched a pilot system, but died in 2004.

The inventor's family, including his widow, enlisted the help of Rembrandt, which says it works to help inventors and patent owners enforce their fights against companies that use their inventions without paying for them.

The suit notes that one of Facebook's own patents cited one of Van Der Meer's patents and so the company was aware of the infringement.

"Although Mark Zuckerberg did not start what became Facebook until 2003, it bears a remarkable resemblance, both in terms of its functionality and technical implementation, to the personal web page diary that Van Der Meer had invented years earlier," court documents said.

The suit also targets AddThis, "one of the largest and most widely used social bookmarking services and an early partner with Facebook", which helps disseminate Facebook's "like" and "share" buttons on third party websites.

Facebook has been targeted by a swathe of lawsuits for alleged intellectual property infringement, but few have been successful.

Rabbi David Hartman dies at 81

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Rabbi David Hartman, one of the world's leading Jewish philosophers and a promoter of both Jewish pluralism and interfaith dialogue, has died. He was 81.

The Shalom Hartman Institute, founded by the rabbi more than 30 years ago, said Hartman died Sunday after a long illness.

The Brooklyn-born Hartman held rabbinical posts in the U.S. and Canada before immigrating to Israel in 1971. He was known for his efforts to promote understanding between Jews of various affiliations both inside and outside Israel.

He was widely published and won numerous prizes, including the 1977 National Jewish Book Award.

In a 2011 interview to the Yediot Ahronot daily, Hartman spoke out against some religious groups in Israel for their strict interpretation of some aspects of Jewish law.

"It's insane, insane," Hartman said. "These people emphasize marginal issues. The important thing is loving kindness."

"They emphasize trivial things. We lost the deeper meaning," he said. "Do you think that people will want to enter a spiritual life made up only of what is forbidden, forbidden, forbidden?"

"A lot of young people come to me and say, 'If not for you, I wouldn't be religious'," he told the paper.

Menachem Lorberbaum, a professor at Tel Aviv University who worked closely with Hartman at the institute, said he "inspired a whole new generation of teachers in Jewish philosophy and theology."

Lorberbaum said Hartman will be known for his accomplishments on religious ethics, and as "a pioneer of interfaith dialogue."

"He was committed to the notion that morality precedes Jewish law," he said.

Hartman is survived by his wife and five children. His funeral was scheduled for Monday.

By their powers combined

Friday, February 8, 2013

Although scientists have been aware that magnetism and electricity are two sides of the same proverbial coin for almost 150 years, researchers are still trying to find new ways to use a material's electric behavior to influence its magnetic behavior, or vice versa.

Thanks to new research by an international team of researchers led by the U.S. Department of Energy's Argonne National Laboratory, physicists have developed new methods for controlling magnetic order in a particular class of materials known as "magnetoelectrics."

Magnetoelectrics get their name from the fact that their magnetic and electric properties are coupled to each other. Because this physical link potentially allows control of their magnetic behavior with an electrical signal or vice versa, scientists have taken a special interest in magnetoelectric materials.

"Electricity and magnetism are intrinsically coupled ? they're the same entity," said Philip Ryan, a physicist at Argonne's Advanced Photon Source. "Our research is designed to accentuate the coupling between the electric and magnetic parameters by subtly altering the structure of the material."

The Argonne-led team focused on the compound EuTiO3 (europium-titanium oxide), which has a simple atomic structure that suited it especially well to the experiment. The titanium atom sits in the middle of a cage constructed of the europium and oxygen atoms. By first compressing the cage through growing a thin film of EuTiO3 on a similar crystal with a smaller lattice and then applying a voltage, the titanium shifts slightly, electrically polarizing the system, and more importantly, changing the magnetic order of the material.

"The europium and the titanium combine to control the two properties," Ryan said. "The position of the titanium influences the electric behavior, while the europium generates the magnetic nature. There's a shared responsibility for the system's coupling behavior."

This new approach to cross-coupling magnetoelectricity could prove a key step toward the development of next-generation memory storage, improved magnetic field sensors, and many other applications long dreamed about. Unfortunately, scientists still have a ways to go to translating these findings into commercial devices.

Potential magnetic and electric memories each have a distinct appeal to researchers. Electric memories ? like the kind used into today's electronics ? allow computers to write data fast and very efficiently. Magnetic memories are less energy efficient, but are extraordinarily robust.

"The more we learn about magnetoelectrics, the more we open up this space that gives us the best of both worlds," Ryan said.

Because the electric and magnetic parameters in these particular materials are so strongly linked, engineers might also be able to use them in the future to create non-binary memories.

"Instead of having just a '0' or a '1,' you could have a broader range of different values," Ryan said. "A lot of people are looking into what that kind of logic would look like."

A paper based on the research, "Reversible control of magnetic interactions by electric field in a single-phase material," was published in Nature Communications.

East Coasters warned to stay home as blizzard nears

As a powerful blizzard closes in on the East Coast, airlines have canceled more than 3,000 flights and some city officials are delivering a blunt message: Don't travel if you don't have to.

?Stay off the roads, stay safe," said Boston Mayor Thomas Menino.

WATCH NOW: Live streaming video of the Northeast blizzard

The National Weather Service is advising Bostonians not to travel after noon on Friday, his office pointed out.

"This is a powerful storm," TODAY meteorologist Al Roker said Friday. "It will probably rank as one of Boston?s top five storms before it?s all over."

The city could get more than two feet of snow.

Nervous fliers in the region monitored the weather and scrambled to change plans as airlines pre-emptively canceled more than 2,600 flights in New York and Boston alone, according to FlightStats.com. More than 3,200 flights were axed within, into or out of the U.S.

AAA urged travelers to be aware of the hazards of winter driving and to keep up with the changing weather conditions.

Get blizzard updates at Weather.com

"As the storm develops, if conditions are poor and you can avoid traveling on the roadways, do," said AAA spokeswoman Heather Hunter.

"We will be keeping an eye on the storm and helping any of our travelers out there."

On Thursday, the weather system affected Chicago?s O?Hare International, where snow and ice delayed arriving flights by more than two hours at one point on Thursday afternoon. More than 80 flights scheduled to depart from the airport were canceled, according to FlightAware.com.

Airlines and airports in the storm?s path were bracing for its impact.

?We?re monitoring the weather system closely and will adjust our operations accordingly,? said Allison Steinberg, a spokeswoman for JetBlue Airways.

Like most carriers, the airline is giving travelers the chance to reschedule their flights without paying any change and cancellation fees. (For a full list, scroll down to the bottom of the article.)

Delta Air Lines urged its passengers to take advantage of the waivers.

?Delta is closely monitoring conditions along the storm's forecast path and encourages customers to consider moving up, postponing or re-routing their travel to avoid possible inconvenience from expected flight delays,? the carrier said in a statement.

Southwest Airlines warned its passengers that flights could be ?delayed, diverted, or canceled.?

Meanwhile, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey announced it is deploying extra personnel and taking all possible measures to handle any wintry conditions that may develop at JFK International, LaGuardia and Newark Liberty International.

The agency noted that its ?winter weather arsenal? includes more than 200 pieces of snow and ice equipment at the airports, including ?melters that can liquefy up to 500 tons of snow an hour? and plows that can clear snow at 40 mph.

Port Authority staff will work around-the-clock in 12-hour shifts during the most severe storms, officials said.

If you are scheduled to fly in the next couple of days, here is a list of airlines offering fee waivers due to the storm:

  • American Airlines passengers traveling to, through or from Boston, New York, Montreal and more than 10 other airports can change their plans for free.
  • Delta Air Lines? policy covers more than two dozen airports.
  • JetBlue Airways will waive change and cancel fees and fare differences for travel to and from a dozen airports.
  • Southwest Airlines passengers traveling to, through or from Boston, Newark, and several other cities are eligible to reschedule their flights for free.
  • United Airlines' policy covers more than 30 airports.
  • US Airways has also relaxed its change-fee policies.

But the utility stopped short of taking all the blame and said Friday that it was looking into whether the electrical relay at fault had a design flaw or a manufacturing defect.

The relay had been installed as part of a project begun in 2011 to upgrade the electrical system serving the Superdome in anticipation of the championship game. The equipment was supposed to guard against problems in the cable that links the power grid with lines that go into the stadium.

"The purpose of it was to provide a newer, more advanced type of protection for the Superdome," Dennis Dawsey, an executive with Entergy Corp., told members of the City Council. Entergy is the parent company of Entergy New Orleans, the city's main electric utility.

Entergy officials said the relay functioned with no problems during January's Sugar Bowl and other earlier events. It has been removed and will be replaced.

All systems at the Superdome are now working, and the stadium was to host a major Mardi Gras event Saturday night, said Doug Thornton, an executive with SMG, the company that manages the stadium for the state.

The relay was installed in a building near the stadium known as "the vault," which receives a line directly from a nearby Entergy substation. Once the line reaches the vault, it splits into two cables that go into the Superdome.

Sunday's power failure cut lights to about half of the stadium, halting play between the Baltimore Ravens and San Francisco 49ers and interrupting the nation's most-watched sporting event for 34 minutes.

Not long after the announcement, the manufacturer of the relay, Chicago-based S&C Electric Co., released a statement saying that the blackout occurred because system operators had put the relay's so-called trip setting too low to allow the device to handle the incoming electric load.

The equipment was owned and installed by Entergy New Orleans.

"If higher settings had been applied, the equipment would not have disconnected the power," said Michael J.S. Edmonds, vice president of strategic solutions for S&C.

In a follow-up statement, Entergy said that tests conducted by S&C and Entergy on the two relays at the Superdome showed that one worked as expected, the other did not.

Entergy spokesman Mike Burns said both relays had the same trip setting.

Entergy's announcement came shortly before company officials went before a committee of the City Council, which is the regulatory body for the company.

During the committee hearing, council member Susan Guidry asked Entergy executives whether they were "fairly certain" that the relay was faulty.

"That is correct," Dawsey said.

However, when asked if the outage was caused by the design or a defect in a part of the equipment, Entergy New Orleans CEO Charles Rice said that had not been determined.

"The equipment did not function properly," Rice said. "At this particular time, based upon our analysis, we cannot say definitively that there was a defect in design. What we do know is that the equipment for some unknown reason, at this particular time, did not react the way that it should have."

Asked if Entergy and SMG still plan to hire a third-party investigator to get to the bottom of the cause, Rice said that possibility remains open.

"We'll work closely with SMG, and if there is a need for a third-party investigation, we will do that," Rice said, adding that Entergy was also working with the relay manufacturer.

Shabab Mehraeen, an assistant professor of electrical engineering at Louisiana State University, said relays are common electrical fixtures in businesses and massive facilities such as the Superdome.

"They are designed to keep a problem they sense from becoming something bigger, like a fire or catastrophic event," he said.

The devices vary in size. Mehraeen, who was not familiar with the relay at the Superdome, said he "wouldn't be surprised if it was bigger than a truck."

The reasons the devices fail are the subject of much academic research into the interaction of relays with the complex electrical systems they regulate.

"It's not unusual for them to have problems," Mehraeen said. "They can be unpredictable, despite national testing standards recommended by manufacturers."

Entergy and SMG had both upgraded lines and equipment in the months leading up to the Super Bowl. Rice said the new gear, with the faulty relay, was installed as part of a $4.2 million upgrade by Entergy that included a new power line dedicated solely to the stadium.

In a separate project, SMG replaced lines coming into the stadium after managers expressed concerns the Superdome might be vulnerable to a power failure like the one that struck Candlestick Park during an NFL game in 2011.

Thornton stressed Friday that the dome was drawing only about two-thirds of its power capacity Super Bowl night. He said typical NFL games in late August or September can draw a little more.

Friday's announcement appeared to absolve Superdome officials of any missteps in the blackout.

City officials had worried that the Super Bowl outage might harm New Orleans' chances of getting another NFL championship game.

But NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell downplayed that possibility, saying the league planned to keep New Orleans in its Super Bowl plans. Mayor Mitch Landrieu said the city intends to bid for the game again in 2018.
