ANA counts cost of grounded 787, not yet seeking damages

TOKYO (Reuters) - All Nippon Airways Co , the launch airline for Boeing Co's 787 Dreamliner jet that has been grounded with undiagnosed battery problems, said it lost more than $15 million in revenue from having to cancel Dreamliner flights this month.

Asia's top airline by revenue said it was unclear as to when Boeing's sophisticated new plane would resume commercial flights, making it harder to predict the longer-term financial impact of having the plane idle.

ANA, valued at close to $7 billion, said it had not yet decided whether to claim compensation from Boeing, and it had no plans, for now, to change a growth strategy that has the technologically advanced 787 at its core. But it conceded that a prolonged grounding of the plane would impact that strategy, and will delay issuing its mid-term business plan for several weeks.

"We have not decided on our right to demand damages, but naturally going ahead, if a damage amount is decided for the incident, we will negotiate," Chief Financial Officer Kiyoshi Tonomoto said at a briefing on ANA's quarterly results.

The Dreamliner, which Boeing says uses a fifth less fuel than traditional planes, opens up new international routes that ANA's existing fleet can't handle.

All 50 of the 787s Boeing has delivered to airlines to date are out of action as investigators in Japan and the United States try to find the cause of two recent incidents with the 787's lithium-ion batteries - a battery fire on a Japan Airlines Co 787 at a U.S. airport and an emergency landing by another plane on a domestic ANA flight after battery problems triggered a smoke alarm.

The grounding of the global Dreamliner fleet - ANA operates 17 of the lightweight, carbon-composite planes - has forced airlines to cancel flights and reschedule passengers on to alternative planes.

ANA has cancelled close to 850 flights until February 18, affecting over 82,000 passengers. The Dreamliner makes up around 7 percent of ANA's fleet, and the airline normally operates around 1,000 flights a day and carries 3.7 million passengers each month. ANA has around 150 trained 787 pilots staying at home. As flights are rescheduled, the carrier's Boeing 777 pilots are having to take the strain, with the extra workload.

"Obviously (the grounding) is a cost increase, but it's not a massive change of fleets," said a foreign hedge fund manager.

KEEPING FAITH

Despite the plane's battery problems, which follow years of development and production delays, investors have kept faith with ANA. Shares in the airline are down just 3.2 percent since before the emergency landing of one of its planes on January 16 - shrinking its market value by around $200 million, the list price of a single Dreamliner.

Few analysts have revised down the carrier's full-year earnings outlook, and the cost of insuring ANA's debt against default for 5 years has halved since November.

"When you're the launch customer there's going to be problems, and when you add the previous Dreamliner delays into the mix, the reaction from ANA investors is just 'Here we go again'," said Shashank Nigam, CEO of industry consultancy SimpliFlying ahead of the earnings report on Thursday.

Underscoring that, ANA is sticking to its full-year operating profit forecast of 110 billion yen, a touch above an average estimate of 107.4 billion yen in a poll of 16 analysts by Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

"There is not yet a plan to restart 787 flights, and amid this uncertainty it's hard to state (the impact). So, at this time, we are maintaining our forecast for the year," Tonomoto said.

Q3 PROFIT FALLS

ANA's October-December operating profit fell by more than a fifth to 32.2 billion yen ($353.6 million) as passenger travel was hit by a row between Japan and China over ownership of islets in the East China Sea. Revenue increased nearly 4 percent to 379 billion yen.

JAL, which has said it so far sees a limited impact on its profits from the 787 problems, reports its earnings on Monday. Analysts see annual operating profit of 179.5 billion yen, while JAL has predicted 165 billion yen.

Neither ANA nor JAL, which has seven 787s, have said they have considered changing orders for 87 more of the Dreamliners.

Boeing CEO Jim McNerney said on Wednesday the airplane maker stood by the troubled lithium-ion battery technology that has halted deliveries of new Dreamliners, which are still being made.

"We feel good about the battery technology and its fit for the airplane. We have just got to get to the root cause of these incidents and we will take a look at the data as it evolves, but there is nothing that we have learned that causes us to question it at this stage," he said as Boeing reported market-beating fourth-quarter profits.

Dr. Phil: Te'o was victim of girlfriend hoax

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) ? Dr. Phil McGraw says Ronaiah Tuiasosopo, who masterminded the dead girlfriend hoax involving Manti Te'o, told him the Notre Dame linebacker was not involved in the scheme and that he ended up falling "deeply, romantically" in love with the football player.

McGraw spoke on the "Today" show Wednesday, previewing an interview he did with Tuiasosopo, a 22-year-old California man who created the fictional woman Te'o knew as Lennay Kekua. Tuiasosopo's interview with McGraw will air in two parts on the "Dr. Phil Show" starting Thursday.

Since the hoax was revealed earlier this month, Te'o has said the relationship with Kekua started online and eventually became serious, even though the two only talked on the phone and exchanged electronic messages, never meeting in person. Te'o said he was told of Kekua's "death" from leukemia just hours after his grandmother died in September.

McGraw said Tuiasosopo told him the voice of Kekua was his. Tuiasosopo and Te'o have each said that while the Kekua relationship went on for several years, there were times when they weren't in contact.

"There were many times where Manti and Lennay had broken up. But something would bring them back together whether it was something going on in his life, or in Lennay's life, in this case in my life," Tuiasosopo said.

Tuiasosopo said he wanted to end the relationship between Kekua and Te'o before he had to fake Kekua's death.

"I wanted to end it because everything I had gone through, I finally realized that I just had to move on with my life and I had to get me, Ronaiah, I had to start just living and let this go," Tuiasosopo said.

Te'o's publicist, Matthew Hiltzik, declined comment on behalf of Te'o and his family.

When the ruse was reported by Deadspin.com on Jan. 16, the report raised the questions about whether Te'o was involved. The story about how he played inspirationally after the deaths of his girlfriend and grandmother led to an outpouring of support from Notre Dame fans. It became the backdrop to the Fighting Irish's undefeated regular season and run to the BCS championship, where they lost to Alabama.

Te'o won seven national awards for his play and was runner-up for the Heisman Trophy. He has denied any involvement from the beginning, and Notre Dame said an investigation of the player's claims backed up his story.

"The feelings, the pain, the sorrow, that was all real," Te'o told Katie Couric in an interview last week.

McGraw says "absolutely, unequivocally" Te'o had no role in creating the hoax.

Te'o said he first learned that something was amiss when Keuka called him on Dec. 6, and told him she had faked her death.

He told his parents about what had happened while home for Christmas break and called Notre Dame coaches on Dec. 26 to let them know. Notre Dame officials said that they interviewed Te'o and retained Stroz Friedberg, a New York computer forensics firm, to investigate the case. They learned on Jan. 3 that there were no records indicating Lennay Kekua existed.

McGraw said he spent hours with Tuiasosopo and his parents, saying he had a number of life experiences that "damaged this young man in some very serious ways."

McGraw said Tuiasosopo had feelings for Te'o.

"Here we have a young man that fell deeply, romantically in love," McGraw said.

McGraw said he asked Tuiasosopo if he is gay.

"He said, 'Well, when you put it that way, yes.' Then he caught himself and said, 'I am confused,'" McGraw said.

Te'o also was asked by Couric if he is gay. Te'o said "no" with a laugh. "Far from it. Faaaar from that," he said.

Te'o said in the interview with Couric that Tuiasosopo tweeted him a direct message on Jan. 16, saying he had been behind the hoax. The message read: "I completely accept the consequences to the pain I've caused & it's important that you know the truth before anyone else."

Te'o told Couric that Tuiasosopo later called him and explained what he did.

"He didn't say why. He just explained that he just wanted to help people and that was his way of helping people. Of being someone that he wasn't and trying to connect with somebody on a different level to help them out," Te'o said.

Te'o said he didn't say much to Tuiasosopo.

"I just found that everything that I believed to be my reality wasn't my reality at all," Te'o said.

Satyam Sharma sails smoothly in qualifying round of All India Senior Ranking Badminton Tournament

India?s upcoming player Satyam Sharma continued his winning run in Men?s Singles qualifying where he outplayed his country-mate Babu S. in a dominating fashion at ONGC All India Ranking Badminton Tournament-2013 on Tuesday, January 29, in Bangalore.

The in-form Satyam was impressive in the arena as he did not show any sign of confusion while playing against Babu and finished off this qualifying round contest by taking the court time for just 20 minutes.

Satyam was in superb form as he played fast and positive badminton all the way and thrashed his compatriot in a one-sided manner with a huge 21-15 and 21-17 score on the board.

Meanwhile, Babu tried his best to play positive badminton but he failed to live up to expectations and eventually went down against his incredible team-mate without showing any considerable performance.

Satyam delivered extremely well from the opening points of first set as he played with remarkable speed and took over the charge of rallies.

The lofty Satyam showed that he has obtained top class skills on court and remained successful in getting a strong domination in the arena by playing attacking and positive badminton.

It was Satyam who did not show any respect to his passionate rival in the starting half and took a reasonable lead on score board.

After the one-minute break, Babu tried to put up strong resistance but failed to take charge of rallies and also committed many mistakes that helped his rival in stretching his lead.

It was a smooth sailing for the in-form Satyam who did not face any reasonable resistance from his challenger and won the opening game with a comfortable 21-15 difference on the board.

Babu was again in trouble in the following set as he received a severe treatment from his opponent who was flawless on court.

The hard to return smashes and net killings kept Satyam ahead of his challenger all the way until the end of first half in second set.

Satyam was composed and positive on court in the ending points of second set and bagged the second game with a superb margin of 21-7.

Working to identify early warning signs in juvenile offenders

Jan. 29, 2013 ? Red flags are easy to recognize in the days following a tragic event like a mass shooting. That's why a group of Iowa State researchers is working to identify those early warning signs in juvenile offenders before they turn into a pattern of criminal behavior.

It is often difficult for people to understand what leads to criminal behavior in children or teens. But by the time a juvenile is arrested, or referred to the juvenile court system, the child generally has displayed a pattern of antisocial behavior, said Matt DeLisi, professor of sociology at Iowa State University.

In some extreme cases, DeLisi said children as young as 5 years old are committing crimes. So when that child becomes an adult, he or she may already have a lengthy criminal record. That is why DeLisi, and the team of researchers, wants to understand what contributes to this behavior in order to correct it.

"With onset in criminal careers, the first sign of that problem behavior is an indicator of how severe it will be," DeLisi said. "If you can help them, you save a ton of money and you save a lot of problems. But it's just the issue of correctly identifying them and that raises a bunch of ethical and other issues."

The connection between the onset and the severity is similar to other ways children start to develop, whether it is positive or negative, at an early age.

"If you have someone who is 3, or even 2, and is already reading it would suggest that the person is highly intelligent," DeLisi said. "The reason is because the emergence or the onset of the behavior is usually inversely related to what they will become. The earlier something appears the more special they are or extreme."

With criminal behavior, the onset begins with rule violations, but researchers found a juvenile's first arrest or contact with the police is the strongest indicator of future problems. The study published in the Journal of Criminal Justice included 252 children living in Pennsylvania juvenile detention centers. The offenders ranged in age from 14-18 and on average had committed 15 delinquent acts in the prior year.

Researchers also discovered that children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder got into trouble at a younger age than other juvenile offenders without ADHD. In fact, their first contact with police happened more than a year prior to other offenders. Youth with conduct disorder were also more likely to be arrested at a younger age. However, researchers urge caution on how the results are interpreted.

"This by no way means that every child with ADHD or conduct disorder will become delinquent or ultimately be arrested. What it does mean is that future work needs to address why some youth with ADHD or conduct disorder become delinquent and others do not," said Brenda Lohman, an associate professor in human development and family studies at Iowa State.

"From a preventive standpoint, this information could then help identify support systems and intervening mechanisms for families and parents, and ultimately decrease rates of antisocial behaviors of children with ADHD or conduct disorder," Lohman said.

In addition to preventive measures, researchers hope to build on this study to better understand the family dynamics that can lead to mental and behavioral issues in children.

"Extensive research indicates that economic hardship has an adverse effect on the well-being of families," said Tricia Neppl, an assistant professor in human development and family studies at Iowa State.

Economic pressures increase the risk for emotional distress, which Neppl said can lead to harsh disciplinary practices. She is working on a study to determine if such hardships, when a child is between the ages of 3 and 5 years old, impact the child's mental health when they are 6 to 13 years old.

"The results suggest that economic adversity influences parental emotional health, marital distress, and hostile parenting which predicts child mental health disorders, such as conduct disorder and ADHD, during later childhood and early adolescence," Neppl said.

As researchers understand more about the connection with antisocial behavior, DeLisi expects there will be an even greater push for intervention and treatment for ADHD and conduct disorder.

"Early interventions are very successful, but they require a lot of investment on the part of people who may be the least willing or able to invest," DeLisi said. Researchers from the University of Pittsburgh and Saint Louis University also contributed to the study.

Washington Ski Areas Enjoy Near Record Snow

With snowfall nearing record totals in many parts of Washington State, the 2012-13 ski and snowboard season is looking to be one of the best in many years. About half the average annual snowfall in the Cascades was on the ground as of mid-January, which means the season will be spectacular for ski resorts barring any late-season droughts.

Ski resort operators - like farmers - are dependent on the weather. Man-made snow can help, but there's no substitute for the fresh powder that both skiers and snowboarders so desire. There have been years when the Cascade ski resorts couldn't even get open before Christmas and then seasons that produced barely enough snow to keep the rocks covered. New skis and snowboards hate rocks.

But this year that doesn't seem to be a concern - at least not yet - as ski resort operators enjoy the benefits of having good snow and even better crowds. In North Central Washington, for example, Mission Ridge is enjoying the second most snow for the beginning of the year - ever. The Wenatchee area was hit in December and January with several storms - one local resident estimated this has been the second snowiest winter since he moved there in the mid-90s. Snow also has been good at most other Washington areas.

If you're looking for destination skiing, the best choice is Crystal Mountain, about 76 miles southeast of Seattle near Mt. Rainier. It's the only ski area in the state with ski-in, ski-out accommodations near the lifts and boasts 50 runs with a vast network of intermediate and expert terrain, but also beginner slopes to get you started. Altogether the lodging at Crystal accommodates about 700 people. There is an extra 1,000 acres of backcountry skiing at Crystal.

Another favorite is Mission Ridge, which is a semi-destination area. While no accommodations are located on the mountain, the ski area is just a few miles from a well-developed infrastructure of hotels and restaurants in the city of Wenatchee. The area's skiing is superb - a little bit drier snow than on the west side of the mountains and not quite as busy as the larger ski areas near Seattle.

Among the new developments this year at Washington ski resorts is the new partnership between Mission Ridge and the Summit at Snoqualmie that offers unlimited free midweek skiing at both ski areas for season pass holders. If you hold a pass to Mission Ridge, you can show your pass for free skiing at the Summit's three midweek areas: Summit Central, Summit West and Alpental.

According to Mission Ridge General Manager Josh Jorgensen, "this partnership gives our season pass holders a fun midweek option for exploring different terrain and parks."

Passholders for the Summit at Snoqualmie Big S Gold, Unlimited and L-T-D pass holders can present their pass for midweek skiing at Mission Ridge. There is also a free Sunday "bonus day" lift ticket on weekends when you purchase a full-priced Saturday lift ticket.

The reciprocal agreement is valid through April 7, 2013. To redeem, simply show your 2012-13 Mission Ridge season pass at any Summit ticket window on midweek days to get your lift ticket.

The big news over at Crystal Mountain is the extended spring season. Winter season will conclude April 15 and then Crystal will be open Fridays-Sundays in April and Saturdays-Sundays in May, along with Memorial Day.

At Stevens Pass, there's a new half-pipe located at the bottom of the main park and above the base of the Brooks chair. Stevens says this is the only half-pipe open in the state. Stevens is popular with Seattle-area skiers who like challenging terrain and a beautiful drive through the jagged mountains, following the Skykomish River.

Abbas asks Israel to let in Palestinians fleeing Syria

RAMALLAH, West Bank (Reuters) - Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas tried to get Israel to let 150,000 Palestinians fleeing war in Syria resettle in the West Bank, but dropped the request after the Jewish state demanded they first give up their right of return, he said.

Syria is home to around 500,000 Palestinian refugees, some of whom have been fleeing the country because of civil war between forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad and fighters seeking to topple his government.

Israel has said it has no plans to allow them to enter the West Bank, which it has occupied since 1967.

"I asked the Secretary General of the United Nations, I told him to ask our neighbors to let us be bring them to Palestine. Four days later the surprise answer came to me, (the Israelis) agree," Abbas told Lebanon-based Al-Mayadeen television in an interview broadcast on Friday.

"They agree on one condition...that each one of the refugees renounce their right of return. We said, forget it," Abbas said.

Around 5 million Palestinian refugees live in U.N.-run camps in Jordan, Lebanon, Gaza, the West Bank and Syria, after they or their ancestors fled or were forced from homes in what is now Israel during the 1948 war of Israel's founding.

Palestinians believe U.N. General Assembly resolutions enshrine a right for these refugees to return to their original lands, an idea consistently rejected by Israel.

Their fate has been one of the thorniest sticking points throughout the decades of violence and diplomacy between the Israelis and the Palestinians.

Twenty thousand Palestinian refugees have fled from Syria into neighboring Lebanon, joining 400,000 Palestinians living in hard-scrabble ghettos in that small nation.

The office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has denied it would let Palestinians from Syria into the West Bank. Israeli government representatives told Reuters they had no information on such talks.

The head of the U.N. agency responsible for Palestinian refugees told Reuters he had not been informed of any deal between Israel and the Palestinians on a repatriation.

"It seems to be, frankly speaking, an unrealistic option from the practical point of view, to move a large number of people through Jordan and then the occupied territory, or Egypt," said Filippo Grandi, head of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East.

Abbas, who himself fled his original hometown in Northern Israel, courted domestic controversy last year when he told an Israeli news channel that he had no desire to return.

Palestinian rivals in the Hamas Islamist group in Gaza, who reject peace talks with Israel that Abbas has long pursued, said the president's comments undermined efforts to resettle lost land.

Steps to Building a Risk Management System: Influencing Compliance

riskmanagementplan As markets continue to evolve, organizations are evolving their definition of compliance.? From an operational context, the speed and level of complexity within the market is driving faster product lifecycles, more extensive and complex supply-chains, and a need to remain competitive and compliant.? For many, this task cannot be achieved through the methods of old; new benchmarks need to be implemented that have the agility and consistency to respond to market needs and make informed and logical decisions.

Risk Management is fast becoming this new benchmark for this decision-making paradigm.? The concept of risk has spanned the entire enterprise, and fits many different aspects of business ? financial, health and safety, environmental, Quality and Compliance, and more.? What makes Risk so powerful in a changing world is its consistency ? Risk is an objective, systematic and repeatable method for identifying hazards and assessing the level of the harm the hazard may incur.? Whatever the event or hazard, Risk remains consistent; this is what makes it universal to all operational areas, and why it is a powerful means of analyzing and making better decisions.

Starting Points:? How to Define your Risk

The challenge for many companies is not in the decision to manage risk, but in knowing where to start in building a Risk Management program.? ?What are my risks? Who determines the level of risk? Who needs to know? What actions need to be taken? What processes need Risk Management???? Questions like this and more plague many organizations, and they will spend more time and effort in this phase of their process than any other when building a Risk Management program.

Enterprise Risk Management: Taxonomy of Risk

Taxonomy is an important part of the Enterprise Risk Management System process.? Taxonomy is defined as the method by which we categorize and aggregate the risks within the company.? The purpose of categorizing risk allows an organization to create a common set of risk types that can be utilized throughout the organization, not just in one operational area.? This is the universal nature of Risk Management; it is able to translate itself from all levels of the organization, and is a stable way of benchmarking compliance from all operational areas.? Some examples of common taxonomies are listed below ? each category represents an area where a potential hazard or threat can exist:

Business processes Information management Program design and delivery
Capital infrastructure Information technology Project management
    Communications Knowledge management Political
    Conflict of interest Legal Reputation
Financial management Organizational transformation and change management Resource management
Governance and strategic direction Policy development and implementation Stakeholders and partnerships
Human resources management Privacy / Information stewardship Values and ethics

With this taxonomy in place, we can begin to categorize any risks and hazards that we identify as we begin our risk journey.

Start with Hazards:? The Hazard Register

Before you begin with any element of risk management, you need to know where the trouble is, or might be.? A hazard is defined as any situation that poses a threat to life, health, property or environment ? it?s an undesired event.? Every company would have these, and the key is to create a determination of what these hazards are.

So, how do most organizations determine this?? They simply go out and ask.? Go to within the company and survey the operational managers of threats and hazards, gather a team together and create proposed hazards that may affect the organization, or go into the historical data and look at past events and the hazards that caused them.? You can also seek external help for standard, common hazards within the industry, but take these with less weight ? what may be a hazard for the industry may not necessarily apply to your organization.

    hazardregister

Measuring Hazards through Risk Assessment and Risk Scenarios

With a library of hazards within the system, we now need to measure these hazards using Risk.? Risk is defined as the potential that a chosen action or activity will lead to an undesired event.? It is the conditions in which the hazard may present itself.? Risk is essentially the severity or probability that a hazard would occur.

If we have a library of our hazards, we can then use risk calculations to determine the level of risk each of these hazards presents.? Having a library of hazards in the system enables you to more effectively assess and rank the risks you are calculating.? This is usually done in the form of a Risk Assessment.? A Risk Assessment is a formula or set of rules that determine how severe or frequent the hazard will be, and assigns a level to that threat ? i.e. Risk Level.? A Risk Matrix is the most common method for determining Risk levels, and provides a clear and easy-to-understand view of the risk of the undesired event.

    Risk Matrix

Risk Scenarios Provide the Complete picture of Risk Management

In order to truly be effective, Risk Management needs to be a collaborative process.? Most organizations create risk teams to review hazards and conduct Risk Assessments, and the process must go through a review and approval workflow.? In a risk scenario, hazards are flagged and Risk Assessments are conducted.? Hazards can occur in many areas within the organization ? financial, operational, quality, compliance, etc. ? and each area must be flagged and assessed, providing a level of risk on many dimensions.? The resulting calculations present the overall risk of that hazard.

    riskscenarios

    Building Controls into Risk Scenarios

Now we?ve identified the undesired events (hazards) within the company, and we?ve assessed the potential of that undesired event occurring (risk), so how do we reduce the level of risk to an acceptable level?? Controls are defined as the methods for evaluating potential losses and taking action to reduce or eliminate the potential for an undesired event.? There are many ways in which organizations implement controls ? new procedures, training, checklists, process changes, product strategies, business decisions and more ? essentially these are processes that are designed with the reduction of the risk of that hazard in mind.? Controls can be related to many hazards, and one control process or event can be related to many hazards, and vice versa.? The goal is to reduce or eliminate risk before the undesired event occurs, and controls are put in place for this purpose. Controls can be preventive in nature, in order to prevent the hazard from occurring, or controls can be reactive to recover from a hazard that has already occurred, to mitigate the overall impact or outcome of the event.

    riskcontrols

Acceptable Levels of Risk:? Action Plans for Mitigation and Reduction of Current Risk

We?ve now created a roadmap for our current risk ? hazards now have a risk associated with them, and we have controls in place to reduce the risk.? But what if the risk level is higher than we?d like it to be?? How do we take action to reduce the risk to a level we feel is acceptable??

The goal of Risk Management is not only to identify our risk, but to take steps to mitigate and reduce the risk to a level that is acceptable.? This may not be the case in our current risk scenario; controls are in place to mitigate the risk, but what if we want to lower the risk beyond what it is today?? Setting an acceptable level of risk is an important part in the Risk Management process.

    acceptablerisk

However, what is considered ?acceptable??? Many companies will interpret acceptable levels of risk differently.? Most organizations will immediately know what is generally acceptable risk, and generally unacceptable risk.? But there is a ?gray area? in between those extremes that many companies will try and quantify.? There is no such thing as ?risk free? - there is always some level of risk in any hazard or event.? What we can do to mitigate the risk is determine which levels we can continue to effectively and logically continue business operations, and set that as our lower threshold for risk.? This term is usually defined ?As Low as Reasonably Practicable? (ALARP), and helps to define the middle area of a company?s risk foundation.? This helps to define the various levels of risk within the organization, and then set the mitigation plan to conform to those levels.

    alarp

Action plans are nothing more than projects; the tasks and deliverables necessary to ensure that actions we take over the course of time will bring those risk levels down to our acceptable level.? This could be in process improvement, employee training, operational change management, and many other ways that would impact the risk of the listed hazard.?

    Risk Scenarios Are Process-Driven

As stated before, Risk Management does not operate in a vacuum ? it requires a team to review and collaborate on levels or risk and actions behind them.? Risk Management is a continuous process, and requires a level of review and approval risk scenarios.? Risk scenarios define risk for your organization, and these scenarios are not static; they change as your operations change and evolve.? Any change in your business model, will have an impact on risk scenarios.? These changes will affect how your interpret risk at every phase in your operation, so it is critically important that as you change processes, so too will the risk scenario change.

Risk Registers Become a Library of Risks

Taking our hazards and putting risk levels to them, and placing controls to mitigate them is all part of a risk scenario.? This is only the first step, however, in a Risk Management System.? Once we created a series of risk scenarios within the system, we need to have a place to centrally store these scenarios, so that when we actually encounter these events in our daily operations, we can reference them and take action.? The Risk Register is a library of all our risk scenarios, that enables us to review all the risks within the organization and begin to do analysis and trending on the risks within the company.? We can reference past risk scenarios to impact potential future risk events, and derive preventive actions towards future risk mitigation.

Risk Dashboard and Risk Reporting: ?With the Risk Register in place as a comprehensive library of risks, this level of data on Risk Management is a valuable tool for the entire enterprise. Building a library of hazards and risk levels is only one part of the story; in order to really be effective, you need to create a level of visibility into this data to analyze and interpret the data.? Risk Reporting is a critical component of Enterprise Risk Management, and uses the data within the risk register to generate reports and metrics surrounding risk.?

Not only will you be able to uncover risk from one operational area, Risk reporting enables you to build risk reports that span operational area and uncover trends you may not otherwise see without visibility into this data.? Risks from one area can easily be transferred to others ? seeing the implications and proactively mitigating risk is all part of Risk reporting.? Furthermore, you can build entire dashboards of risk ranking and risk scenarios, so that management can see what areas in the organization have the highest risk, or even monitor where risk levels are and make assessments to where to focus attention.

    risk registers

Putting it all Together:? Compliance Management and Risk Management Activities

With Enterprise Risk Management built into our system, organizations can plug the risk data into all the processes within any operational areas where the common threats are known.? Risk built into the process ensures that normal operations take into account not only the daily operational needs, but also add a new dimension ? risk ? to the process.? As events enter the various compliance systems, you can draw from the Risk Registers and risk scenarios to assign levels of Risk and make better decisions to each event.? Once risks are quantified and decisions are made, you can influence change more effectively, and seek to mitigate or prevent risks from occurring (or recurring).? Below is an example of how the Enterprise Risk Management System is built within a Compliance Management framework:

    riskandcompliance

Risk Management is not an automatic process.? It requires a level of collaboration and communication from all areas of the enterprise to determine the level of risk, and how to control the risks within your company.? Many organizations will assemble risk teams from all operational areas to determine hazards and threats, derive risk levels for hazards and put in place appropriate controls to mitigate those risks.

Enterprise Risk Management Systems attempt to build a framework for these risk activities and create a library of existing and potential risks, so that as you conduct operations within the business, you can incorporate risk into these processes to make more informed and better decisions.

Only Miss. abortion clinic gets license warning

(AP) ? As the nation marks the 40th anniversary of the historic decision to legalize abortions in the U.S., Mississippi's lone abortion clinic says it received notice that the state health department intends to revoke its operating license.

However, Jackson Women's Health Organization is not expected to close anytime soon.

Under a state administrative procedures law, the clinic can remain open while it awaits a hearing by the department. That could be more than a month away.

Health department workers inspected the clinic Jan. 16 to see if it complied with a 2012 state law that requires anyone doing abortions to be an OB-GYN with privileges to admit patients to the hospital.

Clinic owner Diane Derzis says local hospitals would not issue privileges to out-of-state physicians who work at the clinic.

US stocks edge up as DuPont, J&J report earnings

U.S. stocks rose modestly Tuesday as big companies reported their fourth-quarter financial results.

The Dow Jones industrial average gained 47 points to 13,697 as of 2:54 p.m. Eastern time. The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose five to 1,490. The Nasdaq composite average gained three to 3,137.

The indexes spent the morning edging between small gains and losses. Around noon, the Dow rose decisively and maintained its gain.

Earnings so far have been strong enough to drive a five-day winning streak for the S&P 500. Jack Ablin, chief investment officer at BMO Private Bank in Chicago, said traders have been encouraged by the number of companies beating analysts' profit expectations.

"Granted, we have diminished expectations, but companies are doing a decent job beating on the profit side," he said.

Ablin said the revenue side of the equation has been weaker, preventing a stronger updraft for stocks. Traders might gain confidence, he said, if companies reported stronger demand from emerging markets and Europe.

"The U.S. has been pulling this wagon by itself for the last couple years, and now we're facing some austerity measures. We could certainly use a hand," he said.

Among the Dow components that reported early Tuesday, chemical and bioscience company DuPont reported a sharp drop in income on weakness in its electronics, communications and other businesses, but the results still beat analysts' forecasts and DuPont's stock rose 94 cents, or 2 percent, to $47.93.

Johnson & Johnson said higher sales helped boost its profit from a year ago, when results were weighed down by a slew of one-time charges. However, the company's 2013 profit forecast fell short of analysts' estimates. J&J dropped 54 cents to $72.69.

Verizon Communications Inc. rose modestly after the country's biggest wireless carrier said it activated a record number of new devices on contract-based plans in the fourth quarter. Verizon's net loss widened on restructuring and pension costs and expenses related to the cleanup from Superstorm Sandy. Its stock rose 13 cents to $42.67.

A fourth member of the Dow 30, property and casualty insurer Travelers Cos., led the Dow higher after it said core income categories like investments and premiums written rose in the fourth quarter. Net income fell because of claims filed in the wake of Superstorm Sandy. The stock shot up $1.83, or 2.4 percent, to $78.14, after hitting an all-time closing high of $76.31 on Friday.

The market was closed on Monday for the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.

Yet another company hit by Superstorm Sandy was Delta Air Lines, which said its fourth-quarter profit was nearly wiped out after it was forced to cancel more than 20,000 flights. The storm hit Delta harder than other airlines because it slowed operations at Delta's new oil refinery near Philadelphia. Delta rose 45 cents, or 3.3 percent, to $14.06.

Tech behemoths IBM and Google are set to announce their earnings results after the market closes. Tech companies' results are being watched closely because many of them have warned about a weak fourth quarter. Apple reports after the closing bell Wednesday.

Railroads CSX and Norfolk Southern also announce after the close. Rail companies are seen as a bellwether for the broader economy because their results track the demand for transportation of materials used in manufacturing and goods sold to consumers and businesses.

Some homebuilder stocks fell after the National Association of Homebuilders said sales of previously occupied homes dipped to an annual pace of 4.94 million in December from 4.99 million in November. November's figure was revised lower, but was still the highest in three years.

D.R. Horton Inc. lost 13 cents to $21.39. Lennar Corp. fell 14 cents to $41.94.

The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note was unchanged at 1.84 percent.

Asian indexes closed mixed after the Bank of Japan announced a new round of bond purchases that many observers thought was too weak to have much effect on the economy. The BOJ set a 2 percent inflation target and announced open-ended asset purchases starting in 2014.

Japan's Nikkei 225 index closed down 0.4 percent, while the Hang Seng in Hong Kong rose 0.3 percent. China's Shenzhen average fell 1.5 percent.

European stocks also were mixed. Germany's DAX closed down 0.7 percent despite strong results from an investor confidence survey in that country. Britain's FTSE 100 was flat; France's CAC 40 fell 0.6 percent.

Benchmark oil rose 56 cents to $96.60 on the New York Mercantile Exchange, as global economic reports remained generally positive.

    Tuesday, January 22nd, 2013

    1. Our first idea to help you increase your affiliate marketing business revenue is to use social networking as more than a personal page. Facebook offers the facility for you to create a space for your new online business. You can have a separate space for your business and personal accounts by using the fan pages offered by Facebook.

This will involve doing more than just setting up a fan page and it will take some time and work to recruit your fans. To be the most effective focus on your target niche and locate fans that are interested in what you have to offer. Focus on the fans that you are attracting rather than frantically working to see how many fans you can get.

Phones4U to launch own virtual mobile network using EE's infrastructure

    Android Central

'LIFE Mobile' to launch 3G service this March, 4G later

British phone retailer Phones4U has announced it's to get into the network operator game through a new virtual network operated on EE's infrastructure. The new "LIFE Mobile" network is scheduled to launch this March, with 2G and 3G services being offered at first, followed by 4G LTE options later in the year. EE is, of course, currently the only operator to offer 4G services to British consumers.

Phones4U has not yet revealed details of pricing on the new service provider, but says it'll offer "variety of tariffs and services" with a "broad appeal" to consumers.

According to today's press release, the deal with Phones4U brings EE's total number of MVNO partners up to 25. Phones4U's biggest domestic rival, the Carphone Warehouse, already operates its own virtual network, Talkmobile, through a partnership with Vodafone UK.

Study finds linchpin of skin response to UVA light

    Tuesday, January 22, 2013

Last year, a team of researchers at Brown University discovered that certain skin cells use a light-sensitive receptor found outside of the eye to sense ultraviolet light and quickly begin pumping out melanin to protect against DNA damage. In a new study, lab members identify a key player in that biomolecular chain of events that could someday become a pharmacological target for improving this protective response.

The new discovery, published the week of Jan. 21 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, is that human melaoncyte skin cells rely on an ion channel called TRPA1 to allow a flood of calcium ions into the cells when they are exposed to UVA light. The resulting abundance of calcium ions signals the cell to begin making melanin, the pigment responsible for the tanning response in people.

Several experiments described in the paper show that TRPA1, which is known from a number of other appearances elsewhere in the body, is an essential step in the skin's response to UVA light, said senior author Elena Oancea, assistant professor of medical science in the Department of Molecular Pharmacology, Physiology, and Biotechnology at Brown.

As a matter of basic science, the finding strengthens the evidence of a striking parallel between the skin's response to UVA light and the way the eye detects light.

"Its exciting because it confirms this phototransduction pathway is similar to those found in the eye. It consists of a light-sensitive receptor, molecular signaling cascade, and an ion channel," Oancea said. "The involvement of an ion channel makes this pathway a lot more like other phototransduction pathways."

In other parts of the body, TRPA1 has been shown to help detect pungent but benign chemicals, such as those in intensely flavorful foods. Oancea and lead author Nicholas Bellono said the chemical sensitivity of TRPA1 offers the intriguing possibility that it could become a target for experiments to boost melanin production.

"TRPA1 ion channels are involved in the detection of pungent chemicals such as cinnamaldehyde, wasabi, and mustard oil, and we've now found it's important for this melanin response," Bellono said. "There is a possibility that we can pharmacologically alter pigmentation through regulation of this ion channel."

Oancea and Bellono emphasized, however, that people who go out in the sun should always take widely recommended precautions to protect their skin, such as using high-SPF commercial sunscreens or wearing protective hats and clothing.

    Finding the channel

From the prior research in Oancea's lab, Bellono knew he was looking for some kind of molecular pathway that would start with a light sensitive receptor and trigger an elevated level of calcium ions in the melanocytes.

It seemed possible that a TRP ion channel would be involved because TRPs are involved in phototransduction elsewhere in the body that lead to an increase in intracellular calcium. There are, however, many types of TRP channels, and the molecular identity of the UVA-activated channel in melanocytes was not apparent. Oancea confessed that she even suspected another as the culprit. But many experiments later, the team hit on TRPA1 and amassed considerable evidence to confirm its vital role.

In one experiment, for example, they treated melanocytes with "antagonist" chemicals known to block TRPA1 activity. They then exposed the cells to UVA light and measured the resulting electrical response. The cells blocked with the antagonists had 80 to 90 percent reduction in current compared to the unhindered cells.

They used a similar technique of specifically blocking TRPA1 activity to show that the ion channel contributes greatly to the presence of calcium ions after UVA exposure compared to unhindered melanocyte cells. They also found melanocytes produce little or no melanin following exposure to UVA when TRPA1 is blocked.

They did not, however, do experiments to see whether adding TRPA1 stimulating substances could increase melanin production.

US investigators join 787 investigation in Japan

TOKYO (AP) ? U.S. safety officials and Boeing inspectors joined a Japanese investigation Friday into the 787 jet at the center of a worldwide grounding of the technologically advanced aircraft.

Japanese TV footage showed the American investigators ? one each from the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board and two from Boeing Co. ? inspecting the All Nippon Airways jet on the tarmac at Takamatsu airport in western Japan.

The investigation is being led by the Japan Transport Safety Board.

The pilot of the ANA plane made an emergency landing Wednesday morning after he smelled something burning and received a cockpit warning of battery problems. All passengers evacuated the plane on emergency slides.

The American inspectors were expected to examine the battery later Friday, said Mamoru Takahashi, a JTSB official.

In the wake of the incident, nearly all 50 of the 787s in use around the world have been grounded. Aviation authorities in Japan have directed ANA, which owns 17 of the planes, and Japan Airlines, with seven, not to fly the jets until questions over their safety have been resolved.

The 787, known as the Dreamliner, is Boeing's newest jet, and the company is counting heavily on its success. Since its launch after delays of more than three years, the plane has been plagued by a series of problems including a battery fire and fuel leaks.

An initial inspection by Japanese officials of the 787 in Takamatsu found that a flammable battery fluid known as electrolyte had leaked from the plane's main lithium-ion battery beneath the cockpit. It also found burn marks around the battery.

The 787 relies more than any other modern airliner on electrical signals to help power nearly everything the plane does. It's also the first Boeing plane to use rechargeable lithium-ion batteries for its main electrical system.

GS Yuasa Corp., the maker of the lithium-ion batteries used in the 787s, said it was helping with the investigation but that the cause of the problem was unclear.

The FAA has required U.S. carriers to stop flying 787s until the batteries are demonstrated to be safe. United Airlines has six of the jets and is the only U.S. carrier flying the model.

Aviation authorities in other countries usually follow the lead of the country where the manufacturer is based.
