Franke Park assists leukemia fight | Cancer Kick

Alex Alcantara, a third-grader at Franke Park Elementary, is taking his school?s latest fund drive seriously.

For the last few weeks, he?s been on the lookout for extra change he could donate to the Leukemia Lymphoma Society.

?My mom has a bunch of spare change in her purse, and she doesn?t need it, so she gives it to me,? he said. ?It?s helping people who have leukemia.?

Franke Park is in the middle of a three-week fundraiser organized by media clerk Kathy Senesac. The fundraiser, called the Leukemia Lymphoma Society?s Pennies for Patients program, raises money for blood cancer research.

Classes are competing to see which one can collect the most spare change each week. For the first two weeks Alcantara?s class won the honor, earning a traveling trophy. To date, students have raised at least $1,671. The Parent Teacher Association has contributed $100..

Davonte Alexander, 11, brought in so much change that the cardboard box he kept the change in broke in his backpack.

?It?s good to help sick people,? he said. ?My mom got sick and she passed.?

Senesac said she organizes the fund drive every few years to teach kids about compassion and giving.

?In school, we teach math, we teach science, we teach art,? she said. ?But we should also teach about kindness of the heart.?
