A coherent path to social business | Harold Jarche

Thierry de Baillon and Ralph Ohr, in their post on?Business Model Innovation as Wicked Problem,?conclude the following:

An ever increasing pace of change leads to a decrease in life time of operating business models. Companies are therefore forced to reinvent themselves more frequently by creating new business models. Entering new businesses through open business model innovation exhibits a wicked problem structure. In order to properly address those problems, companies have to follow emergent strategies and need to put decentralized, self-organizing structures in place. Social business brings an answer to the urgent necessity to successfully tackle corporate reinvention and to enhance strategic adaptability by connecting individual human stakeholders.

What kinds of ?emergent strategies and decentralized, self-organizing structures? can be put in place? I think it boils down to three things: Openness, Knowledge-sharing, and Diversity.

1. Openness can be encouraged through the use of social networks and enterprise social platforms. People need to know what others are doing and the default mode has to be sharing. If workers cannot connect with anyone they need to, then the knowledge needed to address a problem may never be revealed to those who need it. Opening communications to everyone is the antithesis of bureaucracy, where lines of control are ever-important. ?Bureaucracies are the enemy of innovation, as they favour self-preservation over change. They are self-serving. They are also reinforced by the notion of jobs. Openness means getting rid of jobs, which subvert openness, innovation and emergent practices. Social networks, powered by social media, help to remove bureaucracy and antiquated ways of working.

2. Just because a system is open does not mean that a learning organization will emerge. People need to practice knowledge-sharing through the narration of work and personal knowledge management. Both are simple concepts to understand but take time to become daily practices throughout an organization.

3. Finally, any organization needs to have a diversity of opinions in order to remain innovative and deal with the wicked problems described by Thierry and Ralph. ?Connections drive innovation?, according to Tim Kastelle. ?We need input from people with a diversity of viewpoints to help generate innovative new ideas. If our circle of connections grow too small, or if everyone in it starts thinking the same way, we?ll stop generating new ideas.? This means giving access to social networks, eliminating tribes such as departmental silos, and actively looking for people with different backgrounds and experience.

Putting all of this together, is what we at the Internet Time Alliance call a coherent organization.

The Coherent Organization:
Cooperation & Collaboration flowing between work teams & social networks
via communities of practice

Windows 8 upgrade diary: a defiantly successful installation

Nothing's nicer than a happy ending. Except maybe a happy beginning, which is precisely what you're looking at above -- Microsoft's new OS captured in all its glory within minutes of completing the installation. What's more, if you saw the first part of this upgrade diary, then you'll know I was aiming for a trickier-than-average setup, with Windows 8 Pro running on a brand new and untouched SSD, alongside Windows 7 Ultimate running in dual-boot mode on my old HDD. As it turned out, this configuration was a breeze -- so long as I totally ignored the Getting Started instructions that came in the box. Read on if you'd like to know more.

Beyond Rugs: Fresh Interior Design Tips For Home

Designing your home?s interior in the way that you want can be one of the most gratifying things you can do. Whether adding new curtains or putting up some new pictures, there is a lot you can do to add a new look to your home. Keep reading for some great interior decorating tips that will have your house looking like it is ready for a professional spread in a magazine!

Resist the temptation to follow current design trends. If you go with a trend, it might be completely unfashionable next year. Use designs that are more classic and timeless.

A good trick to use if you want to make a room in your house brighter is to place a mirror on a wall opposite a window. The light will reflect on the mirror and create the illusion of two windows being present in the space. This will make your dull, dark room brighter.

Remember how sunlight will affect the room when choosing a paint color. If you think about what time it is you will know what walls are getting what sun!

If you are decorating, look at all the current trends and give them a shot. You never want your home to look out of date and behind the times. See what others are doing to their home nowadays.

Think practically when you are engaging in an interior renovation project. It is a good idea to add some of your personality to your home decor, but make sure you stay away from anything wild and crazy. Selling your home will become more difficult if a buyer would have to remodel something just to move in. If you do insist on decorating in your own special way, make sure that whatever you decide to do is easily reversible.

Think about how much light is available in a room when you are considering your design. If your room lacks windows, try a light shade of paint to make the room less cave-like.

Ensure that your drapes and blinds go with your home in each room. Having modern blinds, yet old drapes will make the room appear very odd. It is also important to have these items match the other large furniture pieces in the room.

It is fairly inexpensive to find the right lighting solutions for your living room. You can find less expensive lighting from certain retailers with good discounts. If you are not happy with the old one anymore, you will not feel bad about buying a new one!

If you would like to redesign a small room, you should work on making the space look larger. Different things, such as lighting and furniture can create more available space. If you are interested in making your room look bigger, here are some vital tips.

Keep the same decorating style throughout your home. By using a consistent design theme, you can create a feeling of cohesiveness in every room of your home.

If you?re an environmentally conscious individual, consider implementing recycled materials when redesigning your bathroom. You can use old tiles, old wood, or an old sink or bathtub. There are endless possibilities, and a mixture of these types of materials can be used to create appealing room designs. You don?t have to spend a lot on supplies in order to have a green room that?s ideal.

You may want to do your own interior designing. When you bring in professional assistance, make sure it is understood that you want them to work along with you, rather then just doing it for you. You will feel much more rewarded when you actually see the project through yourself.

When decorating your home, it is always best to keep in mind the number of people who will be living in or staying in your home. Is the number small or large? Remember, each room in your home needs to be approached differently, depending on the rooms needs. For example, bedrooms will have very different design approaches than kitchens or dens. By keeping these things in mind, you are better equipped to design your home more effectively.

It doesn?t matter what you first start with. After a little redecorating, your home will look fabulous. Interior planning can bring out your inner artist. It?s hoped that this article gave you a new perspective on utilizing interior design in your life.

Indonesia: Suspects planned attack on US Embassy

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) ? Indonesia's anti-terror squad arrested 11 people suspected of planning a range of attacks on domestic and foreign targets including the U.S. Embassy and a site near the Australian Embassy, police said Saturday.

The suspects were arrested in raids Friday and Saturday in four provinces, national police spokesman Maj. Gen. Suhardi Alius said.

He said the suspects belonged to a new group called the Harakah Sunni for Indonesian Society, or HASMI.

"From evidence found at the scene, we believe that this group was well prepared for serious terror attacks," Alius said.

Police seized a number of bombs, explosive materials, a bomb-making manual and ammunition, Alius said. They also found a 3-kilogram (6.6-pound) gas cylinder filled with highly explosive material, which had been assembled at a house in the East Java town of Madiun. Videos and images of attacks on Muslims in various parts of the world were also recovered, he said.

Alius said the group planned to target the U.S. Embassy in Jakarta and a plaza near the Australian Embassy and the local office of U.S. mining giant Freeport-McMoRan. It also planned to attack the U.S. Consulate in Surabaya and the headquarters of a special police force in Central Java, he said.

It was unclear how far the plans had advanced.

Alius said police are still investigating whether the group has ties with established terrorist organizations such as Jemaah Islamiyah. An investigator who spoke in condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to provide information to the media said HASMI's apparent leader, Abu Hanifah, was a Jemaah Islamiyah sympathizer.

Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim-majority nation, has been battling terrorists since the 2002 bombings in Bali by militants linked to Jemaah Islamiyah which killed 202 people, mostly foreign tourists.

Subsequent attacks have claimed more than 50 people, mostly Indonesians. The government has arrested more than 700 suspected terrorists and killed dozens more in an attempt to root out militants.

Earlier this month, police warned of a terrorist threat in Bali targeting a ceremony commemorating the 10th anniversary of the bombings. The country's security alert was raised to its highest level.

Last month, police arrested 10 Islamist militants and seized a dozen homemade bombs from a group suspected of planning suicide attacks against security forces and plotting to blow up the Parliament building. The alleged bomb maker turned himself in to police while wearing an empty suicide vest.

Recent terror attacks in the country have been carried out by individuals or small groups and have targeted security forces and local "infidels" instead of Westerners, with less deadly results. The arrests announced Saturday appear to be the first in recent years to involve a group that allegedly planned to target foreign facilities.

Comment - The Dakno Marketing Blog

Something pretty cool happened the other day I wanted to share it with you. In my normal daily routine I?ll tweet a few links of what I feel are especially high value content links our clients create for their Dakno websites, WordPress Blogs and IDX sites. In this particular instance, I tweeted out a link for a terrific Google Map created for Jeff Adler?s Bergen County, NJ Real Estate Home Team Blog. More precisely, it was a clever Google Map for Jeff?s upcoming Bergen County, NJ Halloween Events. You might be asking yourself; ?Okay Bobby, what?s the big deal about a Halloween events map?? Stay tuned!

Before We Get to ?The Map?

In case you haven?t checked your Google calendar lately, Halloween will be here before you know it. Have you written you real estate blog post outlining where locals can find your area?s Halloween events? Holiday posts are typically big site traffic generators. Mind you, they probably won?t generate buyer or seller engagements. What they will do is position you as the area expert and the go to resource for all things in your area. You might even gain a little ?mind share?.

Casting Heavy Stones?!

If you create great content, it will get recognized and shared. It?s like taking your content and tossing it in a lake (where your audience hangs out). The more compelling (weighty) the content, the more ?ripples? it creates and the more attention it will gain. Attention is good and Google measures and rewards content that has been shared and reshared.

Back to The Tweet!

You never know who is listening to your tweets. Or in this case, my tweets. As you can see in the progression of the images below, my tweet about Jeff?s Google map was ?retweeted? by Myles Ma. Mr. Myles Ma is a journalist in Bergen County, NJ. For real estate agents who tweet, should you follow and engage with journalists in your backyard? YES! Myles is so open to engagement that he even says so in his Twitter bio! ?Got a Tip? Contact me!? Granted, what Myles is looking for are juicy tips about breaking news in Bergen County, NJ. But you never know on a slow news day if Myles will reach out to someone like Jeff Adler for a Bergen County, NJ real estate interview.

Now that?s NOT an invitation for local REALTORS to spam Myles with your listings but it is an open?invitation?to be seen as a subject matter expert on real estate.

Although, it?s difficult to see but in the photo below the Reply-Delete-Favorite tools in my tweet you can see where Myles retweeted the Google map tweet of mine.

?

One of the hot topics discussed in real estate marketing circles today is social media ROI. In my mind, one way real estate agents can experience social media ROI is to create awesome content, share it responsibly and engage. The reward will be great relationships, building value with your community, with Google and possibly, be validated by the press for your expertise.

How Has Your Compelling Content Coupled with Your Social Engagement Been Rewarded?

Leave a comment and share how your content and your engagement has been validated and rewarded.

Until next time,

Bobby

TSX sinks 2 percent, hit by earnings, commodities

TORONTO (Reuters) - Canada's main stock index dived as much as 2 percent on Tuesday, with energy and mining shares leading the retreat after a downgrade of five Spanish regions and lackluster U.S. corporate earnings rekindled worries about the global economy.

"It's everything. Everything is down. The mood in the United States has been pretty black. Everything is red across the board," said John Ing, president of Maison Placements Canada.

Energy stocks, already hit hard in the previous session, fell another 2.5 percent. Suncor Energy, one of the most heavily weighted decliners, dropped 2.64 percent to C$32.50. Fellow oil producer Canadian Natural Resources was another key decliner, tumbling 4.06 percent to C$29.53.

Oil and gas companies had fallen on Monday after Canada's shock weekend decision to block Malaysian state oil firm Petronas's C$5.17 billion bid for Progress Energy Resources Corp, raising concerns the government might also veto state-owned Chinese company CNOOC's C$15.1 billion takeover bid for oil producer Nexen Inc.

On Tuesday, lower oil prices were also pushing energy shares down as investors focused on the fragile world economy and its impact on demand for oil, copper and other commodities. The Toronto index's resource sectors tracked bullion and copper prices, which both hit six-week lows.

The index's materials group, home to miners, slid 2.33 percent. Goldcorp Inc was down 2.7 percent at C$42.20.

At mid morning, the Toronto Stock Exchange's S&P/TSX composite index was down 1.82 percent, or 225.24 points, at 12,178.30. It fell as much as 2.12 percent to 12,141.19 earlier in the day .

All 10 of the TSX index's 10 main groups were negative, with nine down 1 percent or more. Only seven stocks on the index eked out gains.

Soft earnings from major U.S. companies like DuPont, 3M, United Technologies also fueled worries over the economy of Canada's largest trading partner.

Meanwhile, a Moody's credit rating downgrade of several regions in Spain added to concerns over the euro zone, which were already heightened as Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy's government remained undecided on whether to seek a bailout.

The financial sector, the index's biggest group, was down 1.7 percent, led by Royal Bank of Canada, the decliner with the biggest impact on the index. RBC, which said on Tuesday it agreed to buy the Canadian auto finance and deposit business of Ally Financial for $4.1 billion, dropped 2.05 percent to C$56.81.

Toronto-Dominion Bank, which struck a deal to buy Target Corp's credit card portfolio, was 1.58 percent lower, at C$81.61.

The financial, energy and materials groups combined make up roughly 75 percent of the index's weight.

Canadian National Railway was down 1.31 percent, at C$85.93. The rail operator posted a modest increase in quarterly profit on Monday as revenues climbed for all its business segments, and affirmed its full-year forecast despite its caution over the economy.

Newest Cicilline TV ad hits back at GOP on his legal career

October 23rd, 2012 at 10:44 am by Ted Nesi under Nesi's Notes, On the Main Site

The air war continues in Rhode Island?s 1st Congressional District.

Democratic Congressman David Cicilline debuted a new television commercial on Tuesday morning called ?Outrageous? that pushes back on charges his Republican challenger Brendan Doherty made in the tough ?No Surprises? spot that began running last week. Cicilline?s new ad was apparently finished in the last 24 hours: it quotes a Monday Roll Call article saying ?Republicans have gone nuclear on Rep. David Cicilline.?

?When it?s time to push that button, we?ve seen campaigns take one of two tactics: a testimonial from a sexual assault victim criticizing the opposition candidate, or, as in this case, both Republican and Democratic candidates have accused each other of harboring sympathies for pedophiles,? Roll Call?s Abby Livingston wrote in an analysis of Doherty?s latest ad.

A Republican source said Cicilline?s campaign is spending $162,000 on TV commercial time from Tuesday through Sunday. Cicilline?s spokeswoman declined to comment on the record. The new ad is a coordinated buy partly paid for by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.

In an email to supporters Tuesday, Cicilline campaign manager Eric Hyers blasted the Republican attacks as ?vile.? He also said the company raised significantly more in recent days than the $40,000 goal set by Cicilline in an email appeal he sent supporters last week.

Doherty has reserved $202,000 in TV advertising time for the final two weeks of the race, but campaign manager Ian Prior said last week Doherty will increase that if the Republican beats his fundraising goals. Federal filings show the National Right to Life PAC spent $3,544 on a mailer backing Doherty.

A WPRI 12 poll last month showed Cicilline at 44%, followed by Doherty at 38% and independent David Vogel at 6%, with 10% of voters still undecided. Doherty had more than twice as much cash as Cicilline on Sept. 30. The candidates debated live for the first time a week ago on WPRI 12.

Caterpillar slashes forecast again, sees weaker economy

(Reuters) - Caterpillar Inc , the world's largest maker of tractors and excavators, slashed its 2012 forecast for the second time this year and warned the global economy was slowing faster than it had expected.

The caution sign was the latest in a string of comments from multinational manufacturers, including General Electric Co and Honeywell International Inc , that the economic recovery remains tenuous and tepid at best.

Caterpillar's retail dealers are selling off inventories, rather than buying new machines, forcing the company to idle some production at plants earlier this year with additional shutdowns coming, executives said on Monday.

"As we've moved through the year, we've seen continued economic weakening and uncertainty," Chief Executive Doug Oberhelman said in a statement.

Caterpillar does not expect the global economy to begin to improve until the second half of 2013, he added.

Shares were up 0.4 percent at $84.22 on Monday afternoon after a drop of nearly 2 percent at the opening bell.

Analysts and investors said the stock, down more than 20 percent in the past six months, appeared to be a good buying opportunity given Caterpillar's strong growth prospects after the world economy recovers.

"The next couple of quarters will be tough-going, but longer-term I don't think their competitive position is threatened," said Morningstar analyst Adam Fleck. "They're still globally the world leader, and this isn't an industry that is going away."

'MUDDLING THROUGH'

Caterpillar posted better-than-expected third-quarter profit on a rebound in U.S. sales of heavy equipment from a 30-year low. Europe and parts of Latin America remain tough regions for Caterpillar.

The weakening euro zone is the "most significant" risk to the company's 2013 outlook, executives said.

Caterpillar's growth is closely linked to global macroeconomic trends, which are now trending "flat-to-down," said Longbow Research analyst Eli Lustgarten.

"They've been muddling through this kind of weak environment," he said of Caterpillar.

The company expects sales of mining equipment to slip in 2013 as falling metal and coal prices force companies to pull back on production. Sales of construction equipment should improve next year, especially in emerging markets.

And sales of power generators should be flat next year, Caterpillar executives said. The three areas each comprise roughly one-third of the company's sales.

For the third quarter, Caterpillar posted profit of $1.7 billion, or $2.54 per share, compared with $1.14 billion or $1.71 per share, in the year-ago period.

Excluding one-time items, the company earned $2.26 per share. By that measure, analysts expected $2.22, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Revenue rose 5 percent to $16.45 billion. Analysts looked for $16.77 billion.

For 2012, the company now expects to earn $9 to $9.25 per share on sales of $66 billion. The company had previously looked for about $9.60 per share.

Analysts estimated 2012 profit of $9.40 per share on revenue of $67.64 billion.

It was the second time this year that Caterpillar has cut its 2012 forecast.

Caterpillar spooked markets at a major industry conference last month, when it looked three years into the future and slashed its earnings forecast for 2015. Oberhelman blamed an "anemic" economic outlook, especially in the mining sector.

The results come the week after Peoria, Illinois-based Caterpillar announced a wave of senior executive retirements, including two members of its leadership team.

UFO Hovers For Hours Above Family Home In Scotland (VIDEO ...

A family in Scotland was amazed to see a glowing unidentified flying object hovering in the sky in the middle of the night above their rural home -- and it stayed there for hours.

Morag Ritchie first noticed the odd, flickering and rotating lights when she woke up around 2 a.m. early Saturday.

"I saw what I thought was a bright star," Ritchie told BBC Scotland. "However, it was a sequence of flashing lights. There was also a darting light coming from the side. There was no sound, either."

Watch the video of the UFO that hovered over the family's house for several hours:

Ritchie woke her family up and they all watched as a continuous moving stream of lights blinked in and out and around the strange object that reportedly remained in this location for several hours near their Fraserburgh, Aberdeenshire home.

"I just woke up all of a sudden and looked out of the window to see all these twinkling lights -- they looked like they were moving," Ritchie said, according to Yahoo News U.K.

As the unusual object just hung there silently, sometimes revealing as many as five individual lights turning on and off around its perimeter, the family captured its movements on video.

"My husband is a fisherman and he's spent many hours looking up at the night sky, so he was quite skeptical when I told him, but even he admitted it was strange," said Ritchie.

The video reveals, and Ritchie reported that, "occasionally, something shot off to the side. I kept going back to my bed but I was so unsettled that I continued waking up," according to STV Local.

The sighting lasted several hours, and by daylight, the mystery object was gone.

STV Local also reported that a Civil Aviation Authority spokesman, Richard Taylor, said, "We have no way of knowing what aircrafts were around that area at that time.

"There was a lot of activity with the northern lights -- the natural phenomenon -- wouldn't that be a more feasible explanation than an aircraft or UFO? If it was an aircraft, it would have been military," said Taylor.

Russian activist claims he was kidnapped, tortured

MOSCOW (AP) ? Russia's top investigative agency announced Monday that a government opponent has turned himself in and confessed to orchestrating riots, but the man and his supporters said he was kidnapped abroad, smuggled back to Russia and then tortured into confessing.

The Investigative Committee said in a statement that Leonid Razvozzhayev admitted to plotting with leftist leaders Sergei Udaltsov and Konstantin Lebedev, and taking funding from a Georgian lawmaker.

Razvozzhayev, an aide to opposition lawmaker Ilya Ponomarev, was in hiding in Ukraine when investigators came to search homes of Udaltsov and Lebedev last week. The activist's supporters reported over the weekend that he had been kidnapped in Ukraine by Russian security officers outside a U.N. office where he was going to apply for political asylum.

A video published on the LifeNews.ru website showed Razvozzhayev being taken away from a courthouse Sunday evening after the court sanctioned his arrest. Razvozzhayev shouted to reporters: "Tell everyone that they tortured me. For two days. They smuggled me in from Ukraine."

The Investigative Committee denied his claims, insisting that Razvozzhayev himself penned a 10-page confession.

The criminal case against the three activists is based on alleged hidden camera footage aired earlier this month by a Kremlin-friendly TV channel. The documentary claimed that they met with Georgian officials to raise money to overthrow Putin's government.

The quality of the footage is poor, but investigators insist that it was not doctored.

Investigators said Monday that Razvozzhayev also talked about his involvement in "organizing" clashes between police and protesters in May in Moscow, and said this was funded by Georgian lawmaker Givi Targamadze.

Targamadze has denied any links to funding the Russian opposition.

An opposition rally on May 6 in Moscow turned violent after police restricted access to the square where the rally was to be held. Bottles and pieces of asphalt were hurled at riot police who struck back by beating protesters with truncheons. The clashes did not appear to have been orchestrated.

Ellen DeGeneres to receive top humor prize in DC

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Jane Lynch and John Leguizamo are joining a lineup that includes Jimmy Kimmel and Kristin Chenoweth to honor Ellen DeGeneres with the nation's top humor prize in Washington.

The Kennedy Center is awarding DeGeneres the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor on Monday night. The show will be broadcast Oct. 30 on PBS stations.

Star entertainers will deliver tribute performances to salute DeGeneres, 54. The lineup includes Jason Mraz, John Krasinski and Sean Hayes.

When she first heard she was receiving the same honor that Bill Cosby, Tina Fey and Will Ferrell won in recent years, DeGeneres joked, "It really makes me wonder ... why didn't I get this sooner?"

DeGeneres began her career as a comedy club emcee in her native New Orleans. In 1986 after she performed on Johnny Carson's show, he invited her over to his desk chat. She was the first female comedian to receive that invitation from Carson.

Turning to acting, DeGeneres landed sitcoms on Fox and ABC, eventually starring in "Ellen" from 1994 to 1998. She broke new ground and a taboo in 1997 when she came out publicly as a lesbian and her TV persona then became the first lead character on prime-time TV to reveal she was gay. A record 46 million viewers watched the episode.

The show began to tank, though, and was canceled a year later. The feeling of rejection was enough to send DeGeneres into a depression. Still, "Ellen" paved the way for future shows to feature gay characters, from "Will and Grace" to "Modern Family."

DeGeneres came back with a CBS sitcom, movie roles and even a stint as an "American Idol" judge. Forbes magazine has ranked her as the 47th most powerful woman in the world and estimated her earnings at $53 million last year.

Her hit talk show that debuted in 2003 is now in its 10th season. Among other achievements, that's where she eventually persuaded President Barack Obama to dance.

"She's brilliantly shined a light on society, and that's what Mark Twain did," said Cappy McGarr, an executive producer for the Mark Twain Prize show, when the award was announced in May.

The prize honors comedians in Mark Twain's tradition of satire and social commentary. Past winners include Steve Martin, Lily Tomlin and Whoopi Goldberg.

McGovern an unwavering, often unrequited, liberal ...

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. George McGovern was an unwavering, often unrequited advocate for liberal Democratic causes. He pursued those goals in plainspoken, usually understated, Midwestern style. He was a dedicated, decent man, a devoted Democrat even when the party establishment turned away from him in defeat.

He wasn't good at political gamesmanship. He suffered his worst blunders when he strayed from straight talk in his doomed 1972 presidential campaign. It didn't fit the man and it shook the credibility he treasured.

McGovern was a partisan without the poison that increasingly infected American politics. In his career-long quest for programs to feed the hungry, in the U.S. and worldwide, he worked in partnership with Bob Dole, a former Republican leader of the Senate, where they'd both served.

During his years of political retirement - he lost his South Dakota Senate seat in 1980 - McGovern remained active, lecturing, teaching and writing. He even waged a token presidential campaign in 1984. He'd also run briefly for the 1968 nomination after the assassination of Sen. Robert F. Kennedy.

In his 2011 book, "What It Means to Be a Democrat," he summed up his credo:

"Above all, being a Democrat means having compassion for others. ... It means standing up for people who have been kept down ..."

That was the essence of his program during four terms in the House, three in the Senate, and a doomed and crushed presidential campaign in 1972. By the time he was nominated for the White House, McGovern had been marginalized by rivals in his own party, who argued that he was too far left to be elected. That probably was so, but President Richard M. Nixon was the overwhelming favorite against any Democratic challenger.

McGovern got just 37 percent of the vote to Nixon's 61, carrying only Massachusetts and the District of Columbia. Embittered, he considered whether to even stay in politics, especially as other Democrats made him a symbol of what ailed them and kept him off their stages. McGovernite became a label for losers. But he went back to the Senate, and within months he could joke ruefully about his landslide loss.

"I opened the doors of the Democratic Party and 20 million people walked out," McGovern later joked of his reform commission, which had broadened the nominating process, driven out the old party bosses and ultimately made the presidential primaries the arenas for choosing nominees of both parties.

There was nothing strident about McGovern; even when his words were harsh, his delivery tended to be bland. As a young man, he had been a warrior, and a heroic one. As a senator, he opposed U.S. involvement in Vietnam from the beginning, in 1963. Arguing in 1970 for legislation to cut U.S. war spending and force troop withdrawal, he offended his colleagues by telling them, "This chamber reeks of blood," vehement words delivered in the matter-of-fact McGovern style. His 1972 presidential campaign proposals included withdrawal from Vietnam, amnesty for draft evaders and steep cuts in the Pentagon budget.

For a time, he also advocated a $1,000 tax grant to every American to replace complex welfare and income support programs, saying the needy could spend it and the wealthy would pay it back in taxes. It came with no numbers, no estimate of the cost, although McGovern claimed, against arithmetic and logic, that it would balance out at zero. He dropped that idea, but the Republicans never did.

That spoke to one of his chronic political problems. He was an idea man, not a manager. Witness the uncontrolled chaos of his nominating convention, dramatized when assorted Democratic interest groups spent so much time talking that McGovern did not get to deliver his own acceptance speech until 2:48 a.m., long after the TV audience had gone to bed.

But one of his best-remembered, and most unfortunate, lines came later - after his unvetted selection of Sen. Thomas Eagleton of Missouri as his running mate turned into a political disaster with the disclosure that Eagleton twice had undergone electric shock therapy for depression. McGovern said he was "1,000 percent" for Eagleton and wasn't dropping him from the ticket. But he had to. Then he had to shop for a running mate, with five Democrats declining before Sargent Shriver finally said yes.

So if there'd been any doubt about his outcome against Nixon, it was erased before the fall campaign even began. McGovern was frustrated because Nixon stayed at the White House and seldom campaigned at all. McGovern called him the most corrupt president in American history, as The Washington Post published a succession of Watergate disclosures. Nixon just denied it all.

The political pain would ease. More devastating was the death in 1994 of his daughter, Teresa, who had suffered mental illness and alcoholism, and froze to death in a snowbank near a bar where she'd been drinking in Madison, Wis. "You never get over it, I'm sure of that," he said. "You get so you can live with it, that's all." McGovern and his wife Eleanor, who died in 2007, had four daughters and one son.

McGovern wrote a book, "Terry," about his daughter's life struggle, the family impact and his own worry that his political preoccupations had somehow contributed to her troubles. He used the proceeds to open the Teresa McGovern Center in Madison to help others afflicted by addictions.

As a candidate, McGovern had to fend off conservative claims that he was weak on national defense, a naive peacenik - that he had, according to the far right, shirked combat, which was a lie. He was a decorated World War II pilot with 35 combat missions in B-24 bombers.

It could have been a campaign asset, but he talked little about it. He did in a Labor Day speech: "I still remember the day when we were hit so hard over Germany that we were all ready to bail out. So I gave this order to the crew: 'Resume your stations. We're going to bring this plane home.' I say to you and to people everywhere who share our cause: 'Resume your stations. We're going to bring America home.'"

That last line became the standard closing of his campaign speech. But he didn't repeat the details of the mission that won him the Distinguished Flying Cross for safely landing his crippled B-24. Perhaps he should have said more about his service, he said later, "but I always felt kind of foolish talking about my war record - what a hero I was."

That he did not was typical George McGovern.

Highveld Lions to bowl first against Yorkshire ? Cricket News - Bettor

Highveld Lions to bowl first against Yorkshire ? Cricket News Roundup ? October 20, 2012 ? Part 2

Eager to make it to the knockouts of the ongoing Champions League Twenty20, the Highveld Lions won the toss and elected to field first against Yorkshire, underneath an overcast sky at the New Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg today, in a match which could propel them to a spot in the semis.

Today?s game presents the Lions the opportunity to secure a semi-final spot alongside the Sydney Sixers, should they manage to win. Their victory will also render the remaining Group B matches, including the Chennai Super Kings versus Mumbai Indians game in the evening, dead.

Having proven their prowess at chasing in the previous matches during their ongoing CLT20 campaign, the Lions went into the match high on confidence, with just one change to their line-up ? youngster Dwaine Pretorius coming in for Zander de Bruyn. Yorkshire meanwhile, were hit by a series of unfortunate injuries, and forced to bring in Iain Wardlaw and Oliver Hannon-Dalby in place of the injured pair of Ryan Sidebottom and Moin Ashraf.

Backing Kevin Pietersen to deliver an outstanding performance during England?s upcoming tour of India, former England skipper Andrew Flintoff claimed the hard-hitting right-hander had always played his best innings under pressure.

?When Kevin's got a point to prove he usually proves it with the bat,? Flintoff said while speaking to BBC Sport. ?I think Alastair Cook might ... get KP at his best. When people get on Kevin's case he comes out swinging and scoring runs.?

Pietersen, whose 73-day exile from the England team recently came to an end after the resolution of his long-standing tiff with the England and Wales Cricket Board, was named in England?s squad for the upcoming tour of India. While doubts abound regarding his ability to settle back into the team, and deliver during the crucial Test series, Flintoff is convinced Pietersen will be fine, citing his thunderous performances for England in South Africa, in front of a jeering crowd in 2005, as an example of his tenacity.

Eager to secure his place at the top of Australia?s Test batting order, opening batsman Ed Cowan expressed his keenness to prove his worth against the South Africa, the current top Test team, in an upcoming extended-overs series this November/December.

?If you are proving yourself against the South Africans at the moment you are a high quality Test player,? Cowan said. ?And it also makes it pretty clear cut if you are scoring runs against them as opposed to Bangladesh or Zimbabwe when everyone is still asking questions, saying ?oh he wouldn't do it against the best team in the world?.?

Following a promising 68 on debut against India last year, Cowan has failed to rack up any outstanding performances, with his highest score in the extended-overs format being a 74. In addition, he also failed to impress during Australia?s tour of the West Indies earlier this year. However, selectors have decided to persist with the opening duo of Cowan and David Warner for Tests, which means the 30-year-old has an ideal chance to prove his mettle, as Australia take on South Africa in November/December this year for a crucial Test series.

One family's battle with the Carolinas E. coli - Charlotte Observer

Growing up in the Gaston County town of Stanley, Tracy Roberts couldn?t wait for the yearly Cleveland County Fair.

The rides thrilled her. The corn dogs were always a favorite. The animals charmed her.

Now raising two daughters of her own in nearby Gastonia, Roberts and her husband, Mike, like many parents, wanted to pass on the fair and its 88-year-old tradition to their girls.

?It?s a place where you were free to be a kid,? she said.

Yet on Oct. 9, five days after attending the 2012 fair, her 5-year-old daughter Hannah had to be rushed to Levine Children?s Hospital in Charlotte, infected by E. coli bacteria that enlarged her spleen, attacked her liver, nearly shut down her kidneys ? and could have killed her.

Friday, she was among 106 fairgoers, 64 of them children, from nine Carolinas counties who were sickened by the animal-borne bacteria. The bulk are from Cleveland, Gaston and Lincoln counties.

The outbreak is one of the largest ever in North Carolina.

Last week, Josh and Jessica Lefevers of Bessemer City in Gaston County buried their son Gage, a month shy of his third birthday, after he died Oct. 12 from complications of the E. coli infection.

Besides Hannah and Gage, 10 others had been or are still hospitalized.

Since the outbreak, state and county health officials have investigated ? interviewing victims, their families and more than 150 other unaffected fairgoers ? to try to find a cause. The common thread: a visit to the regional fair during its 11-day run that ended Oct. 7 and the likely exposure to animals there, North Carolina health officials reported late last week.

Pinpointing the cause will bring little comfort to Mike and Tracy Roberts.

They just want Hannah home, and they want to help make sure another family doesn?t have to endure their nightmare.

?We don?t know what the future holds, or how long she?ll be here in the hospital, but we?re just relieved and grateful that Hannah is improving,? Tracy said. ?If this had to happen, I am sorry that it happened at the Cleveland County Fair. It is such an American tradition and it?s usually a fun place. But, for us at least, it?s not a tradition anymore.

?We?ll never go back.?

?She just looked?

Perplexing to the Robertses is that Hannah never touched any of the fair animals.

On Oct. 4, Tracy and Hannah picked up 13-year-old sister Allison from school and the three headed to the fair, founded in 1924 by the Shelby Kiwanis Club.

They had planned to go two days earlier, a Tuesday, but it rained.

Minutes after they arrived at the petting zoo, an animal let out a shriek and frightened Hannah.

?She said: ?I don?t want to touch them, I don?t want to touch them,?? Tracy said. ?We left the petting area immediately. Hannah didn?t pet anything. She didn?t feed anything. She wouldn?t get near any of the animals.

?She just looked.?

Before they left, they cleaned their hands at a required wash station.

Since Tracy is a self-professed ?clean freak,? she helped Hannah wash her hands several times during the four hours they spent at the fair, including using a hand sanitizer she?d packed in her purse. She said soap provided at the wash stations seemed watery.

On their way to the rides, they walked through the animal barns where pigs, ducks and a donkey were housed.

?We washed our hands again,? she said. ?We didn?t touch anything in there. We just went in there and looked.?

Three days after the fair, on a Sunday, Hannah experienced diarrhea. By Monday evening, her stomach hurt. Tracy called her pediatrician. Monitor Hannah at night, the doctor said, there was a ?big virus? going around.

Tuesday morning, Hannah complained more. She was agitated and shouted at her parents.

Her doctors told Tracy to get her to Levine. By then, they?d begun to see other cases and suspected E. coli.

Cleveland County Sheriff Alan Norman?s 13-year-old son Alex also was infected.

Alex, a member of Future Farmers of America, went to the fair several times to work in the livestock barn. He complained of diarrhea on Oct. 10 and by the next day suffered full-blown E. coli symptoms.

?We had him at the doctor at 8:30 a.m. on Friday,? Alan Norman said. ?The doctor diagnosed E. coli and gave him a strict regimen. We caught it early.?

Alex didn?t need to be hospitalized, but had to be hydrated every two hours. He plans to return to Burns Middle School soon.

The sheriff himself spent 11 afternoons and evenings at the fair and didn?t get sick. At times, 21 of his deputies worked the fair. Late last week, two came down with E. coli-like symptoms.

?I think the fair probably did everything possible to prevent this from happening,? said Norman, 52, who started going to the fair when he was 5. ?From what I know, all the preventative measures were taken. I don?t know of anything that could have been done differently.?

He was concerned about the victims still hospitalized and saddened that one child died.

?It makes you realize again that life is so fragile,? he said.

How did it spread?

On Friday, state health officials said preliminary findings ?point to animal contact? as the likely source for the outbreak.

Along with interviews, public health workers have gathered environmental samples for lab tests and conducted a geographical analysis of the fairgrounds, said the Laura Gerald, state health director with the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services..

?We may not be able to pinpoint a single source, but hope to have more conclusive results within a month,? Gerald said in a statement Friday. ?Our goal throughout this investigation is to identify how to prevent similar outbreaks and deaths in the future.?

The required precautions were in place at the Cleveland County Fair, said Dorothea Wyant, the county?s health director.

But they apparently didn?t fully protect fairgoers.

Based on the interviews, she said, one fairgoer witnessed a child feeding a goat a carrot. ?The animal took a bite and then the child took a bite,? Wyant said.

Parents rolled strollers through exhibits, muddy from the rain, despite signs urging them not to. They could have spread the exposed waste. Children picked up straw that might have been exposed and fed it to animals.

The rain washed ?animal feces everywhere,? she said. ?When feces and rain mix together, it runs into the parking lot. It could have gotten on shoes that jumped into the seat of a ride. People hopping on the ride may have touched it.

? ? When you put all this stuff that we?ve been told together, it?s probably not hard to figure things out.?

The fair?s manager, Calvin Hastings, deferred questions to the fair board?s lawyer, O. Max Gardner III of Shelby.

Gardner said the board is waiting for the investigation?s findings.

?Whatever needs to be done will be done to make sure the public is protected to the fullest extent,? he said.

Tracy Roberts wants officials to consider banning petting zoos and other contact exhibits at the Cleveland County Fair, or require cleaning rides every day, and inspecting animals and soil each day for the E. coli bacteria.

If it rains, she said, officials ought to consider shutting down the fair until they can determine there?s no E. coli contamination.

?Why take a chance with anybody?s life?? Roberts said.

Karen Beck, a veterinarian for the N.C. Agriculture Department, said animal tests for E. coli aren?t reliable so daily inspections would be impractical.

?If you don?t get a positive reading, it doesn?t mean the animal doesn?t have (E. coli),? Beck said. ?Since animals shed E. coli intermittently (through waste), there?s no way to look at an animal and say that it?s got E. coli. The testing is not a reliable method.?

Hannah?s improving

For now, the Robertses rarely leave Hannah?s side.

After more than a week at Levine, she has been showing signs of improving. Wednesday, she?d been moved from an intensive care bed to a private bed and received three days of dialysis. By Thursday, her appetite was returning. A ?snacker who usually has no trouble eating three meals a day,? Hannah declared that her ?tummy felt hungry,? Tracy said. ?That was such a good sign.?

By Thursday, her parents twice helped her out of bed to walk. She tired quickly, but was able to sit up.

Yet doctors have given Mike and Tracy no recovery timeline. Hannah hopes to be released by Halloween so she can be a pink princess.

?It was touch and go for a while,? Tracy said. ?We?re just trying to keep her strength up. To think we were just out for a good time.

?Now I won?t leave the hospital until I can take her home with me.?
